Shelby County Schools' liability insurance limits the categories of passengers authorized to ride school district buses on scheduled routes during daily transportation of students to and from their residences or from and to their assigned schools. Standard categories of passengers covered by the system's liability insurance include eligible students, Transportation Department staff, school principals, and school staff authorized by the principal. Authorization also may be granted school board members and central administrative staff to ride as special adult passenger(s) on regular routes under the following procedures.
When special adult passenger(s), as defined above, desire to ride school buses during pick-up and delivery of students from residences to assigned schools, or from schools to residences, the special adult passenger(s) must contact the Director of Transportation. The Director of Transportation will schedule a date and time for the individual(s) to ride and will notify the individual(s) within three (3) days following the request.
The individual(s) will be assigned to a bus based on available space for the routes assigned. The special passenger(s) must board the bus at the bus lot at the scheduled departure time, and must remain on the bus through the entire route unless prior arrangements are approved by the Transportation Director for the individual(s) to board or depart at one of the schools served on the bus route. Special adult passenger(s) riding a bus must not, in any way, delay the bus driver, the scheduled operational times for the bus routes, or compromise safety in any way.
Once the Director of Transportation makes the bus assignment, the following individuals will be notified that special adult passenger(s) will be on board the assigned bus and routes:
