APPLICATION PROCEDURE
In order to be on the substitute list, all applicants must file the following with the Human Resource Department: (1) an official teacher application; (2) a substitute teacher application; (3) an official report of a negative result on either a tuberculin skin test or chest x-ray; (4) a finance data form; (5) a W-4 form; (6) and a copy of Tennessee Teachers' Certificate (certificated substitutes only); (7) I-9 form. The substitute must complete an interview with a representative from the Human Resource Department. The applicant's file is then reviewed and, if approved, the applicant's name will be placed on the first possible substitute list. A letter of verification is mailed to all approved substitute teachers.
RENEWAL PROCEDURE
The process described is applicable only for the school year in which the application is filed. If the applicant wishes to remain on the substitute list for the following school year, he/she must file another substitute application. These applications will be mailed in June to all substitutes on the rolls at the close of the school year.
REMOVAL FROM THE SUBSTITUTE LIST
A substitute may have his/her name removed from the substitute list by: (1) requesting that the Human Resource Department remove his/her name from the current substitute list; or (2) failing to renew his/her substitute application. After notification of unsatisfactory performance, the Human Resource Department may remove a substitute's name from the rolls. See the section entitled "Evaluation" for discussion of this procedure.
INSURANCE
Substitute teachers are not eligible for group hospitalization or life insurance. This restriction includes those substitute teachers who have been assigned to interim positions.
Substitute teachers may enroll in the Student Accident Insurance Plan available to all Shelby County School students and staff. Enrollment is open throughout the school year, and forms are available to each school. Liability insurance is available through the Tennessee Education Association. Procedures listed in the Substitute Handbook dated June 1, 1984, will be the official manual of procedures and these procedures will be followed by substitute teachers, and administrators in all applicable situations. These procedures include a Board Policy on reporting teacher absences, procedures for substitutes at the local school level and a method of evaluation for substitute teacher performance and on the job growth.
