STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES




The privileges and rights of all students shall be guaranteed without regard to race, religion, sex, creed, or national origin.

Students shall have the right to advocate change of any law, policy, or regulation. Students may exercise their right to freedom of expression through speech, assembly, petition, and other lawful means. The exercise of this right may not interfere with the rights of others. Freedom of expression may not be utilized to present material which tends to be obscene, slanderous, or to defame character, or to advocate violation of federal, state, and local laws, or official school policies, rules, and regulations.

Students may present complaints to teachers or administration officials. Adequate opportunities shall be provided for students to exercise this right through channels established for considering such complaints.

Students and/or their parents/guardians may present complaints regarding discrimination as set forth in the following statutes:

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964;
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972;
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973;
Age Discrimination Act of 1975;
Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990; and
To the Shelby County Schools Federal Rights Coordinator for Students.
