Introduction

The K-5 Shelby County Schools Mathematics Curriculum Map is a suggested timeline combining A Blueprint for learning: A Teacher's Guide to the Tennessee Curriculum with the Mathematics Curriculum Standards approved by the Tennessee State Board of Education, August 31, 2001.  Although the curriculum adopted by the State Board of Education in its entirety remains on the web for additional reference, this document makes the curriculum more accessible to classroom teachers.  Both documents are located at www.tennessee.gov/education.

It should be noted that significant changes have been made to the math curriculum standards beginning in the 2009-2010 school year. These changes are listed on the state website as well as included in this guide. Pacing charts note what the current standards are as well as the ones which will take effect next year in order to address gaps that will occur due to the changeover.

The guide includes system curriculum pacing charts, accomplishments, state standards, learning expectations, and performance indicators.  It also contains textbook correlations, available teacher resources, descriptions of assessments, teaching strategies, and manipulatiave management ideas. It also contains both a listing of the standards effective in 2009-2010 as well as correlations between current and upcoming standards.

The guide is designed for teachers in the Shelby County Schools system to use in implementing a math program that prepares students to meet, if not exceed, the state standards and prepares students for the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP).

The online edition of the Shelby County Schools Elementary Math Curriculum Guide is available through the Shelby County Schools web page.  The online edition provides access through internet to additional resources.  It includes links to state standards, strategies, and teacher resources.  Teachers are encouraged to use the guide to plan instruction that will meet the needs of ALL students.
