The K-8 Shelby
County Schools Integrated Language Arts Curriculum Guide was developed by a
committee comprised of Shelby County Schools classroom teachers. The guide was developed using the
Tennessee English/Language Arts Curriculum Standards approved by the Tennessee
State Board of Education August 31, 2001.
The guide includes system curriculum maps, accomplishments, state
standards, learning expectations, and performance indicators. It also contains textbook correlations,
available teacher resources, descriptions of assessments, teaching strategies,
and classroom management ideas.
The guide is
designed for teachers in the Shelby County Schools system to use in
implementing an integrated language arts program that prepares students to meet,
if not exceed, the state standards and prepares students for the Tennessee
Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP).
This balanced approach to reading, writing and elements of language will
enable students to achieve a deeper understanding and application of language
arts.
The online edition of the Shelby County Schools Elementary Integrated Language Arts Curriculum Guide is available through the Shelby County Schools web page. The online edition provides access through internet to additional resources. It includes links to state standards, strategies, and teacher resources. Teachers are encouraged to use the guide to plan instruction that will meet the needs of ALL students.
