We Are Challenging Minds at Crosswind

Classroom Campground

Classroom Campground is a simulation allowing students to explore and enjoy nature in their classroom. By drawing on past experiences and participating in new ones, the students become more aware of their environment and what they can do to enjoy and preserve it. Science, social studies, language arts, and math skills are all incorporated into the various facets of camping.

Hands On Science Program

The Hands On Science Program is an eight week program designed for students to have fun while learning to explore his/her world using a science perspective. It's objectives include helping children develop skills using the scientific process of observation, measurement, testing, and peer discussion. It increases communication skills through new vocabulary and helps develop a keener awareness of the world and the vast and delicate network of which it is composed.

Eagle's Academic/Physical Fitness Recognition

At the end of the academic year, 2 students (1 male, 1 female) are selected from each homeroom. The selection is based on the students desire and attitude to accomplish a physical skill.

Summer Blast

In May, the students participate in an event called Summer Blast. They play games like Frisbee Golf, Tug - of -War, Mickey Mouse, Funny Foot Putt-Putt, Water Relay, and End Zone Ball.

Accelerated Reading

The Accelerated Reading program is designed to help the students to improve their reading abilities. At Crosswind Elementary, students in grades two - five work independently with AR. First graders work with their teachers and the librarian during the first semester. During the second semester, first graders have a fourth grade buddy that helps them to become independent workers. Students earn points which admit them to the point clubs and can be spent at the AR store in May. Crosswind honors the student in each classroom with the most accumulated points for a year. Each six-weeks, the top AR class in grades one through five are also honored by having the traveling trophy in the classroom for the next six-weeks.

Fifties Day

The fiftieth day of school is a big celebration for First Grade students. The day begins with decorated doorways with pink and black balloons, records, and juke boxes. Teachers and children dress like those who lived in the 1950's. Each lesson taught during the day relates to 50. The children write 50 spelling words, complete a grid to 50, color the 50 states, and enjoy readers of Dick, Jane, and Spot. Parents and visitors are invited to join each class outside for stations of 1950 fun. The activities include jump rope, limbo, hoola hoops, musical chairs, Hokey Pokey, the Bunny Hop, and bubble gum blowing. The day is complete with some good old-fashioned Coke floats!

Kids Kan Food Drive

The Kid Kan Food Drive gives all Shelby County students the opportunity to share with those people who are less fortunate. Each school collects can food items for one week in February or March. These food items are donated to Memphis Interfaith Association which serves all of Shelby County.

Book Fair

Crosswind hosts a book fair in the spring of each school year. The purpose of the book fair is to promote reading as a fun, family activity, to furnish the students with additional reading materials, and to provide the library with funds to purchase additional Accelerated Reader materials and items for the AR store.

APEX
APEX is a program for students who meet the Tennessee guidelines for the intellectually gifted. The class strives to help students develop all parts of their brain. APEX nurtures life long learners by emphasizing critical and creative thinking, research and study skills, and problem solving. The Crosswind APEX curriculum features the exploration of Ancient Greece. During this study, students examine myths and create original presentations and art work to extend learning. Ancient Greece comes alive for the students. Crosswind APEX students believe in Achieving their Potential for Excellence

Environmental Club

The Environmental Club consists of fifth graders who want to help take care of the Earth. Students attend meetings on Friday mornings to discuss environmental issues, work on various projects such as handling the recycling of paper, plastic bags, six-pack rings, and ink cartridges for the school, and help keep the school grounds free of litter. Students in the club also give environmental tips during morning announcements

Saluting the World

Fifth Grade salutes various countries from around the world. The students rotate to every classroom to learn about each country. Creating artwork, tasting local delights, and learning about the culture of each country is the focus of the celebration. As a finale, the students create floats to represent the various countries and the whole school is invited to the "Parade of the World."

Eagle Express

Through funds provided by the Collierville Education Foundation, our children at Crosswind have the opportunity to write letters to any student or staff member at the school. Parents can also write to their children at school. There's a mailbox in the lobby where parents can drop off mail to be delivered to their child. The postal workers collect the mail for processing and delivery.
