What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading motivational program that is supplementary to the reading instruction that your child receives from his/her teacher. All students in grades 1st-5th participate in it.

The main objectives of the program are:
* to foster a lifelong love of reading
* to help students become independent, self-directed readers
* to help students achieve optimal reading growth

How does Accelerated Reader work?

  • Students pick an A.R. book that interests them and is in their reading range. A student's reading range is determined by his/her score on the S.T.A.R. test, which is given several times throughout the year.
  • Students read at their own level and pace. Time in class, is set aside each day for students to practice their reading. Students are encouraged to read at home, as well.
  • Students take a short, multiple-choice quiz on the book just read. After the quiz is completed, immediate feedback is given to the student. A score is given. The questions missed are shown, along with the correct answers.
  • Students earn points based on the difficulty of the book read, and the number of questions answered correctly. Students can earn prizes based on he number of points earned.
