In our increasingly technologically oriented society, it is imperative that our children's awareness of their natural environment be norished and heightened both at home and at school. To that goal, Germantown Elementary School has created an outdoor classroom which enables teachers to integrate ecological studies across the curriculum.
Using seed money from grants and donations, a landscape architect drew the initial plans for a concrete pad and walkway. Eagle Scout troops have assumed the responsibility of removing debris, pulling privets, planting new native trees, and identifying the existing trees in the immediate area. They have also built bridges and split rail fences to enhance the aesthetics of the area. Lesson plans were developed by Mrs. Jane Brown, a second grade teacher to implement the use of this classroom by all other teachers at GES. An ecology club was formed and became known as the W.O.W. Club (Wonderful Outdoor World) which helps maintain the outdoor classroom area.
Bradford Woods is named for the former GES principal, Mrs. Marjorie Bradford, who initiated the project. It is an open-ended project which will grow and change throughout the coming years. You are encouraged to come by the school at any time to observe our progress.
