Lakeland Elementary Celebrates Black History Month!
As everyone knows, February is Black History month. This year we were lucky enough to have Opera Memphis come give a performance of songs by African American writers and performers. It was an awe inspiring performance!
Last year, Lakeland Elementary celebrated with a visit from author Alice Faye Duncan, who wrote Miss Viola and Uncle Ed Lee as well as several other wonderful books. Ms. Duncan is a school librarian and the author of The National Civil Rights Museum Celebrates Everyday People and Willie Jerome. She was born and still lives in the city of Memphis. Miss Viola and Uncle Ed Lee is her second picture book. Ms. Duncan says that love, tears, old folks, children, music, and the sun inspire her to write. We are inspired by her stories and were so lucky to have her come visit our school!
