Lakeland Elementary School was opened in August 2001. It was fun and exciting to start a new school library from the ground up! The librarian, library assistant, parents, grandparents, volunteers, and many others pitched in countless hours to get the new library up and running.

Finally, we opened! Look at our beautiful library!

Twelve 5th graders at LES serve as student library assistants. During their
exploratory times this semester they wrote letters to some of their favorite
authors requesting autographed books to give to the kids a St. Jude. They
received 12 books. They presented them along with a copy of our "same
book-same time" selection, Stone Fox To St. Jude representative and teacher,
Lou Ann Vaught on Dec. 11.

Library Activities
Accelerated Reader Program
The Lakeland library has thousands of AR books for all reading levels available for checkout. A list of our AR tests is posted below. Parents and students may also find a list of our tests at the public libraries in Bartlett, Arlington, and Germantown.
Author Visits
The Lakeland library hosted author/illustrator Ashley Bran in the spring of 2003 for its inaugural author visit. His visit was followed in the fall of 2003 with a visit from author/storyteller Margaret Read MacDonald. Links to both of these authors are provided below.
Adopt-a-Book
The Adopt-a-Book program at Lakeland allows students to "adopt" their favorite books. Every "adopted" book will have a book plate with the student's bname and inscription. Many adopt books as memorials, birthday gifts, and even for their pets! Since we opened last year, more than 450 books have been adopted.
Young Authors Club
Students are encouraged in creative writing throughout the year. Any Lakeland student who writes a story or poem can submit it to Mrs. Liles for review. Upon acceptance, the student is encouraged to read the story aloud to his/her peers. Then the young author signs the "Young Author" chair in the library.
Library Club
The Library Club is made up of fifth graders. They put up reading incentive posters throughout the school, shelve boosk, and assist during open circulation times. They also prepare and present Puppet Shows to the 2nd Graders.
Storytelling Club
The Storytelling Club will learn different storytelling techniques form Mrs. Liles. They will search for a favorite story to learn and retell. After practicing their techniques, they will entertain other students with their stories!
