Oak Elementary opened in 1987. We are located in one of the fastest growing towns (population about 40,000) in the Memphis/Shelby County area. Our building, described by our students as a huge happy face, is situated on 15 acres that was once a sod farm. It is a unique K-5 child-centered, community supported school. Serving this population are faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, extended family members, and community supporters who believe as we do: Educating Everyone Takes Everyone and Schools Exist to Serve Children. They commit their time and resources to a program which has received national recognition for the accomplishments of its students, parents, and school leadership.
We base our philosophy on two ideas:
Optimum Achievement for Kids.
Our school is comprised of approximately 700 diverse students. We serve all socio-economic groups, all ability levels, all kinds of physical disabilities, the CDC preschool, resource, expanded resource, functional skills, and adaptive functional skills, all family types, and students from displaced homes who reside at the Baptist Children's Home .
An extensive Parent Volunteer List is sent home the first days of school. Parents serve on these committees: Parent Advisory. Other opportunities include our PTA, Pastries with Parents, Career Day Presenters, Parent Workshops, Accelerated Reader Parents, Classroom Readers, Curriculum Nights, Lunch at Oak and two evening Parent Conference Nights. We have a clinic manned exclusively by our parents.
An important part of our program helps our students develop a social conscience. These activities include: Coats for Kids, Kids Kan (helping the local food bank), St. Jude Math-a-Thon, Food Drives, DARE, Jump Rope for Heart, Safety Patrol, Christmas Angels, Lee Denim Day (Breast Cancer Research), and Recycling Drives.
Oak has been recognized for these accomplishments on the state and national level:
