KINDERGARTEN
In
Kindergarten, the young learners are exposed to many new concepts and
practices associated with learning and growing. The children learn
appropriate school behavior and learn to cooperate with fellow
classmates. Academic skills include learning letter sounds and
writing basic letter strokes. Mathematical concepts and learning
about the world around them are also introduced. The closing of the
year brings the treasured tradition of the "Three Piggy Opera" by
each class at the Kindergarten recognition program in May.
FIRST
GRADE
First
graders begin to develop their reading skills and continue learning
basic Mathematical concepts. Science classes teach environmental and
earth sciences, and Social Studies classes focus on the State of
Tennessee. First graders are also perfecting handwriting skills .
Mothers of first graders are treated to a wonderful breakfast and
musical program for the annual Mother's Day program put on by each
class.
SECOND GRADE
Second
graders continue to develop their Reading and Math skills. Science
and Social Studies allows the students to learn more about the world
around them. Students begin to focus on more difficult concepts in
all subject areas.
THIRD GRADE
Many new
skills are introduced in third grade. In Mathematics, basic skills
are reinforced, but multiplication and division are introduced. Basic
cursive handwriting strokes are mastered. Social Studies instruction
includes not only communities in the United States, but learning
about communities around the world.
FOURTH GRADE
The State
of Tennessee and learning about the United States are the focus of
the fourth grade Social Studies program. Mathematical concepts of
long division and equations with fractions are cultivated. Developing
writing skills is the focus of the Language Arts program. Fourth
graders participate in the TCAP Writing Assessment in the
spring.
FIFTH GRADE
Fifth
graders not only have more skills, but also have more teachers.
Students "switch" classrooms and teachers to have subjects taught by
a team of teachers. One teacher may focus on one or two subjects for
the grade level. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are
developed.
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
Physical
fitness activities and game play are taught. In Physical Education,
students also learn the importance of teamwork and good
sportsmanship.
ART
EDUCATION
Art
education includes, but is not limited to, basic art concepts of
line, texture, and balance. Students also learn to appreciate the
aesthetic beauty of art today and of past times. Pottery, sculpture,
drawing, and painting are part of the art curriculum for each grade
level.
MUSIC
EDUCATION
Music
education provides the opportunity for all students to learn about
the different types and styles of music. Music from other countries
and cultures is presented in music classes. Musical instruments are
very popular in the music classes. Band, recorder group, and chorus
offer students the opportunity to share the beauty of
music.
LIBRARY
The library
enables the students to gain information, gather resources, and to
appreciate the beauty of literature. All students enjoy the library
where many visiting authors and storytellers make visits to the
school to entertain and delight the students.
COMPUTER LAB
Tara Oaks
has a Macintosh computer lab with thirty Macintosh computers. The
computer lab contains two ImageWriter printers, an overhead
projection computer and screen, and Internet access. Each homeroom
class visits the lab for thirty minutes a week, as well as an
additional hour assigned to each grade level, to reinforce skills or
to complete research using various CD-ROMS or the Internet. A
computer presentation station with a laser disk player and 32-inch
monitor screen remains in the lab for laser disk
presentations.
