GRADE LEVEL OVERVIEWS

KINDERGARTEN
In Kindergarten, the young learners are exposed to many new concepts and practices associated with learning and growing. The children learn appropriate school behavior and learn to cooperate with fellow classmates. Academic skills include learning letter sounds and writing basic letter strokes. Mathematical concepts and learning about the world around them are also introduced. The closing of the year brings the treasured tradition of the "Three Piggy Opera" by each class at the Kindergarten recognition program in May.

 FIRST GRADE
First graders begin to develop their reading skills and continue learning basic Mathematical concepts. Science classes teach environmental and earth sciences, and Social Studies classes focus on the State of Tennessee. First graders are also perfecting handwriting skills . Mothers of first graders are treated to a wonderful breakfast and musical program for the annual Mother's Day program put on by each class.

 

SECOND GRADE
Second graders continue to develop their Reading and Math skills. Science and Social Studies allows the students to learn more about the world around them. Students begin to focus on more difficult concepts in all subject areas.

 

THIRD GRADE
Many new skills are introduced in third grade. In Mathematics, basic skills are reinforced, but multiplication and division are introduced. Basic cursive handwriting strokes are mastered. Social Studies instruction includes not only communities in the United States, but learning about communities around the world.

 

FOURTH GRADE
The State of Tennessee and learning about the United States are the focus of the fourth grade Social Studies program. Mathematical concepts of long division and equations with fractions are cultivated. Developing writing skills is the focus of the Language Arts program. Fourth graders participate in the TCAP Writing Assessment in the spring.

 

FIFTH GRADE
Fifth graders not only have more skills, but also have more teachers. Students "switch" classrooms and teachers to have subjects taught by a team of teachers. One teacher may focus on one or two subjects for the grade level. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are developed.

  


 SUBJECT AREA OVERVIEWS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical fitness activities and game play are taught. In Physical Education, students also learn the importance of teamwork and good sportsmanship.

 

ART EDUCATION
Art education includes, but is not limited to, basic art concepts of line, texture, and balance. Students also learn to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of art today and of past times. Pottery, sculpture, drawing, and painting are part of the art curriculum for each grade level.

 

MUSIC EDUCATION
Music education provides the opportunity for all students to learn about the different types and styles of music. Music from other countries and cultures is presented in music classes. Musical instruments are very popular in the music classes. Band, recorder group, and chorus offer students the opportunity to share the beauty of music.

 


 

 LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

LIBRARY
The library enables the students to gain information, gather resources, and to appreciate the beauty of literature. All students enjoy the library where many visiting authors and storytellers make visits to the school to entertain and delight the students.

 

COMPUTER LAB
Tara Oaks has a Macintosh computer lab with thirty Macintosh computers. The computer lab contains two ImageWriter printers, an overhead projection computer and screen, and Internet access. Each homeroom class visits the lab for thirty minutes a week, as well as an additional hour assigned to each grade level, to reinforce skills or to complete research using various CD-ROMS or the Internet. A computer presentation station with a laser disk player and 32-inch monitor screen remains in the lab for laser disk presentations.
