30+Club

Purpose: The 30+ Club recognizes students who achieve
a 30 or above on the ACT and also serves to motivate and challenge
others to excel academically. Members will also develop positive
character traits by giving their time to tutor other students.
Requirements: Members must have acheived a 30 or higher
on the ACT and must accept responsibility to contribute six hours
per academic year tutoring others for ACT preparation
Meets: as determined by leadership team.

America's PRIDE
Pride
Website
Sponsors: LeeAnne Smith and Beverly Karem
Purpose: PRIDE is a national organization that is devoted
to drug abuse and violence prevention through education. Using
the vehicles of public speaking, drama, dance and song, PRIDE
members reach out to their peers, younger students, and the community
with a powerful drug-free message.
Requirements: PRIDE members must take a pledge to remain
drug-free and must also maintain their grades to be an active
PRIDE member.
Meets: PRIDE meets every Wednesday from 2:15-3:30 (cafeteria
or study hall) PRIDE also meets on Mondays, during September and
October, from 2:15-3:30 for rehearsal
Cost: $30 which includes a performance t-shirt and a
$10 membership in PRIDE Youth programs, the international organization
with which our team is affiliated.
Band
Sponsors : Jim Smith and Spencer Nesvick
Purpose : The Houston band is a performance organization
for grades 9 - 12. Performance opportunities are offered
through Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Clarinet Choir,
Flute Choir, Percussion Ensemble, and Color Guard.
Requirements : While enrollment in band class is
open to anyone with prior band experience, participation in a
performance group is at the discretion of the director.
Meets : Once a day during school and after school
as needed.
Cost : A small fee is charged to those students
using school owned instruments. There is also a charge for
summer band camp.

Bridge
Builders
Sponsor: Dr. Terri E. Lindquester
Purpose: The program is design to promote communication,
understanding , and trust among developing leaders.
Requirements: Bridge Builders is a two year comprehensive
youth leadership training program. Participants are selected during
their sophomore year, and represent a wide variety of cultural,
economic, ethnic and social backgrounds.

Concert Choir

Purpose : To represent the school and Shelby county
as ambassadors of goodwill in T.V. presentations, civic organizations,

at educational workshops.

in singing and performing.
Practices : Daily throughout the school year.
Tryouts : Members are auditioned in the spring
for participation in the following school year.

Marketing Students

Purpose: DECA is a co-curricular association of marketing
students. It encourages practical skill development in leadership

Environmental Club
Sponsor: Natalie Parker-Lawrence
Purpose : Begun in 1992, the HHS Environmental
club has been the energy behind many projects in school history,
including fundraising for an environmental library, disaster relief,
Habitat for Humanity, railroad crossings, Earth Day, recycling
bins, bicycle racks, hikes, trips to the Tremong Institute in
the Smokey Mountains and to Arkansas for the Heifer project. We
completed our fourth house in 2010 for Habitat for Humanity and
over the hears have raised over $6,000 for this worthy program.
Requirements : must have an open mind about the
responsibilities of people to our planet.

Purpose: Horizons was formed in 2001 for the purpose

Purpose : HOSA is a national youth leadership organization

International Thespian
Society
Sponsor : Bo List
Purpose : The International Thespian Society is
the student counterpart to he Educational Theater Association.
The Thespian Society offers students exposure to the larger world
of theater. As members, students must participate in events
such as the State Thespian Conference, the International Thespian
Festival, and have opportunities to earn scholarships for college.
Requirements : Any student with a professional
interest in the performing arts. Students earn membership
through the Thespian point system. Ten points are required
for initiation.
Meets : 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month or as
designated by the sponsor.
Cost : After membership initiation: $22 annual

Purpose : To enhance knowledge of and appreciation

Key Club
Sponsor: Karen Flowers
Purpose: To serve the school and community through volunteer
service
Requirements: Students volunteer for ten hours of service
sessions, with four sessions per school year. The volunteer opportunities
are listed on Key Club agendas which are provided at the two meetings
held per month. The person with the most service hours can win
a $1000 savings bond. All students are invited to join.

Knowledge Bowl
Sponsor : Martha Gunn Poole, Ben Cook, Robert Lofton
Purpose : To nurture a love of trivia and competition
with other schools. There is an opportunity for scholarship money
through the WREG channel 3 television contest.
Requirements : Any student interested in any grade
may participate. Students must have a wide range of interests
and the ability to recall facts quickly.

Literary Magazine- Avatar
Sponsor : John Traverse
Purpose : To create the school's literary magazine, Avatar,
which involves the writing and editing of poetry, a variety of
prose styles, as well as selecting artwork and laying out the
magazine for national competitions.
Requirements : Open by application and by current, previous,
or future enrollment in the literary magazine class.
Meets : After school in Rm. 223 and both club days
Cost : $25 per staff member
Martial Arts
Sponsors: Jim Smith and Spencer Nesvick
Purpose : The Martial Arts Club is designed to
promote skills in self defense and educate students in a variety
of Martial Arts genres. Students involved in M.A.C. also participate
in many service projects around the school, helping other clubs.
Meets : 3rd Tuesday in Rm.34 and every other
Friday after school

Mock Trial
Sponsor : Wolff
Purpose : To teach courtroom procedure, etiquette,
and strategies, while arguing the prosecution and defense of a
case. District competitions are held in February, and State
competitions are held in March.
Requirements : One night of practice a week, student
run study groups with team, the student needs to be available
for state and district competitions.
Tryouts : Will be held towards the end of October
for roles of Attorney and Witness.
Practices : Thursday night 6:30 - end.
Cost : $10 to pay for Attorney coach's fees, props,
and team expenses.
Model United Nations
Sponsor : Wolff
Purpose : A role playing activity in which participants
assume the roles of delegates from various nations. Its
purpose is to introduce participants to the structure and purpose
of the United Nations and the challenges of international relations.
This includes exposing delegates to an understanding of how diplomacy,
politics and caucuses operate.

Mu Alpha Theta

Canady
Purpose : To foster an interest in mathematics
and to help other students through tutoring and/or mentoring so
that they can learn to enjoy mathematics also.
Requirements : 11th and 12th graders who have completed
Algebra II. They must have at least a 96 average in each
trimester of their high school mathematics courses. They
are recommended by their mathematics teacher and then must be
voted in by the other club members.

Purpose : Recognize those students who have shown
outstanding ability in the field of art; serve as an inspiration
for students to strive for higher goals in their work. Art show

semester of art at Houston High School and are currently enrolled
in art with a consistent "A" average. No ISS or

Pamoja

Purpose : Pamoja means togetherness in Swahili.
This is an organization of students who work to promote togetherness

Mustang and surrounding communities.

The Pony Express

Purpose : To produce the Pony Express, the student
newspaper of Houston High School, and to allow reporters the opportunity
to attend club meetings for the purpose of news coverage.

a member of the staff will enroll in Journalism/Newspaper.
The main areas studied are news writing, sports writing, editorial
writing, photography, advertising, and graphic design. Teacher

Shakespeare Festival
Sponsors: Natalie Parker-Lawrence, HHS English, Theatre
and Music Departments
Purpose: The annual HHS Shakespeare Festival showcases
20-30 performances on one day in April to commemorate Shakespeare's
birthday. The proceeds from student donations go to fund four,
$500 scholarships for students (seniors) who will major in theatre,
English, communications, journalism, or film in college. The scholarships
are named for Tully Daniel, the first theatre teacher at HHS who
tragically died at our school in 1998.
Requirements: Students who wish to perform sign up in
march or they may wish to compete in teh Shakespeare contest in
January, competing against SCS, MCS, independent, and Catholic
schools for monetary prizes and a trip to NYC. HHS has had many
winners!

SGA (Student Government Association)

Purpose : To create leaders for tomorrow by giving
the best and brightest Houston students opportunities to:
represent the student body, participate in enriching community
service activities, and actively promote spirit and positivity

Show Choir
Sponsor : Dr. Rayburn
Purpose : The HHS Show Choir is a group of 12 young
men and women who perform wide variety of pop, jazz, and
Broadway music through singing and choreography. The group
performs for various church, community, school, and civic organizations.
On average, the group performs 32 times during the year.
At Christmas the group, dressed in traditional Dickens carolers
attire, becomes a caroling group performing again for many organizations
throughout Shelby County .
Requirements : Demonstrate a very advance vocal
skill with the ability to sing a variety of styles (pop, jazz,
Broadway, etc._. Demonstrate the ability to quickly learn
and perform jazz and hip hop dance steps. Demonstrate the
maintenance of a high GPA because of the demands of the class
in practice and performance at night and during the school day.
Demonstrate the ability to work well with others in a group situation
in which constructive criticism is frequently given.
Try-outs : Auditions are held in March each year
for the following school year.
Cost : $300 choreography fee and a $65 uniform
fee.

in M242 and Grades 10-12 meet in A206.

National Honor Society
Sponsor : Kristin Ferryman
Purpose : To further the students' interest in
the culture, language and diversity of the Hispanic population
world-wide.
Requirements : Students must presently be in Level
III or AP classes, maintain an "A" average the last
three trimesters in Spanish classes and an overall GPA of 3.0
or higher. Students must have excellent conduct, with no ISS or
OSS, Ns or Us in conduct on high school transcript and be willing
to do community service activities.
Meetings : Officers meet when announced by the
sponsor. Students meet once or more after school or at night
at local restaurants or homes.

Teams Engineering

Purpose : To participate in the National TEAMS
Engineering competition. Students work in groups to answer questions
concerning the mathematical application of science to solve themed
engineering scenarios.
Requirements : Teacher invitation extended to current
and former Honors or AP Physics students.
Meets: January- March after school in M133.

Wordsmith
Sponsor: Evie Wolfard
Purpose: Wordsmith is a competitive, creative writing
team that competes once a year against both public and private
schools in West Tennessee. Our award-winning team is chosen via
teacher recommendations and writing samples.
Requirements: Must love to write under tight time constraints,
and must have a creative mind

Yearbook

Purpose : To produce the Mustang Spirit
Requirements : Journalism class - 5 days a week.
