History

Shadowlawn Middle School is one of (13) middle schools in the Shelby County School System in Tennessee. Located inside the city limits of Bartlett, Tennessee, Shadowlawn has a country school atmosphere in an urban setting. Students from Shadowlawn Middle generally continue their education in one of three Shelby County High Schools- Bartlett, Bolton, or Arlington High Schools. Shadowlawn has an enrollment of approximately 1000 students in grades six through eight. Although the address of the school is Arlington, Tennessee, Shadowlawn is relatively close to the city limits of Memphis. New housing construction is taking place all around the school and this factor will likely continue to affect Shadowlawn's growth over the next several years.

Shadowlawn Middle is comprised of several buildings. Building A is the home of the main office, the administrative offices, the library, the cafeteria, sixth grade classes, and one team of 7th grade students. The adjacent "Annex" building contains support classroom- art, music, and band. Building B is the home of the 8th grade classes, Science labs, two teams of 7th grade classes, and Special Education classrooms. The Gymnasium and portable classrooms complete the campus. The students are fortunate that the school is adjacent to a public park with playing fields, a walking track, and picnic areas.

Shadowlawn Middle School was first accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges in Schools (SACS) in 1975 and has maintained continual accreditation since that time.

Shadowlawn Middle School is situated on a portion of the Mittie Becton estate, which was purchased by Shelby County Schools in 1957. Mr. Edward Gray was the schools first principal and served for ten years. The faculty consisted of only twelve teachers serving grades 1-8.

In 1964 Shadowlawn was struck by lighting, two wings of the school, consisting of classrooms were burned down. As of today the only part of the old structure that remains are the annex and cafeteria.

New principals, Mr. Sammy Lucas and Mr. Harold Galloway started their tenure at Shadowlawn in 1967. A high school building was added in 1968 to accommodate grades one through eleven. Before the twelve grade classes could be added, in 1968, the high school students were transferred to Bartlett High School to follow through with integration court orders.

When Mr. Vernie Jones became principal in 1970, Shadowlawn once more became an elementary school. Beginning the fall of 1970, Shadowlawn's staff began working with students of all races from the Shadowlawn and Ellendale communities. The next year, 1971, the school became a 7th and 8th grade complex serving 900 students from several outlining communities. Due to Memphis annexation of some of these areas in 1973, enrollment dropped to 500. It wasn't until 1976-77 that Shadowlawn became a middle school, with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

Dr. Snowden Carruthers became principal for the 1976-77 school year. The enrollment grew to approximately 1000 students, which now encompassed the entire Bartlett community.

Our next principal, Mr. James Westmoreland came to Shadowlawn in 1980. The 1981 school year brought about another change in the schools grade structure. At this time 6th grade students were returned to the elementary schools, while middle school consisted of only 7th and 8th graders. Shadowlawn still had an enrollment of over 1000 students for these two grade levels.

Mr. Robert Hatton was appointed principal in 1983-84. Sixth grade students were returned to the middle school structure in 1987-88. The school reached top enrollment numbers of over 1400 students. During the years of 1993-94, the opening of Elmore Park Middle (formerly elementary) helped drop our enrollment to 1132 students. In 1995-96 Appling Middle School opened with Shadowlawn dropping in numbers of student enrollment to 761. With uprising and continual growth in the Bartlett community, Shadowlawn quickly raised its enrollment numbers back to approximately 1200. During the summer of 1999 the school had its first major overhaul. Renovations were made to our main building, lunch room area and new construction of a kitchen. Mr. Hatton left as principal after serving Shadowlawn for over 20 years.

With the beginning of 2003-04 school years Shadowlawn has had several administrative changes.
Mrs. Lee Ann Kight was principal for two years, Ms. Jamie Baker for one year and Mr. John McDonald started his principalship during the 2006-07 school year.
