Kindergarten through Third
Grade
The student:
- locates the library media center
- recognizes library media specialist
and assistant by name
- practices appropriate circulation

- demonstrates proper care of books

- exhibits appropriate behavior
in the library media center
- recognizes book parts-spine,
cover, title page (including author's name and illustrator's name), table
of contents, indexes, dedication and glossary
- identifies areas of the library-easy,
fiction, nonfiction, reference, biography, magazines
- locates and uses the technology
areas (with or without assistance)
- uses online catalog
- demonstrates an awareness of
the Caldecott Award, Coretta Scott King Award (illustrators), and Volunteer
State Book Award
- recognizes reference tools-dictionary,
encyclopedia, map, and globe
- discovers the Tennessee Electronic
Library
- locates fiction and nonfiction
books by call numbers
- understands that some books are
true and others are make-believe
- tells the sequence of story
- distinguishes between different
types of literature (historical fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, science
fiction, folk tales, fairy tales, mystery, etc. )
- compares and contrasts different
versions of the same stories reflecting different cultures
- chooses materials based on individual
interest
- relates literary experiences

Fourth and Fifth
Grade
The student:
- uses Dewey Decimal System to
locate books
- uses print and non-print sources
(CD-ROM, Internet, TEL, Webquests, etc.) to locate information
- expands knowledge of book parts
(appendix, bibliography, captions, maps, charts, graphics, indexes, glossary,
table of contents)
- uses additional reference tools
(almanac, special dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, magazines and newspapers)
- demonstrates awareness of Newbery
Award, Coretta Scott King Award, and Volunteer State Book Award
- distinguishes between fact and
opinion
- identifies genres (myths, legends,
plays, poetry, short stories)
- identifies author's purpose and
audience
- recognizes bias and stereotyping
in literature
- recognizes bibliographic information
(author, title, call number, publisher, copyright date, summary) on OPAC
- understands and uses "see" and
"see also" references
Sixth through Eighth
Grade
The student:
- demonstrates technology literacy
by the end of eighth grade.
- locates and becomes familiar
with the Vertical File
- discovers the Abridged Readers'
Guide to Periodical Literature
- becomes familiar with special
encyclopedias (science, black history, American history, etc.) special dictionaries,
and books of quotations
- uses skim/scan techniques when
reading for information
- uses correct style in bibliographic
citation
- demonstrates awareness of Michael
Prinz Book Award for excellence in young adult literature
- adheres to copyright laws and
fair use guidelines
- reads, views, and listens discriminatingly
- identifies key words of a topic
or question and connects these to appropriate terms for searching
