Human Body Systems

Introduction

Albert Einstein has been frozen using Cryogenic technology. Your team at the National Institute of Cryogenics has been assigned the task of surveying the body for possible damage due to the crystals which formed during the freezing process. You will be injected, due to a new reducing technique, into various systems to evaluate the structures and functions of each area. Your task is to prepare for your journey by researching the functions of the systems, noting possible hazards you might encounter in visiting these systems, and creating a map for this journey. Upon completion of this journey, you will submit your findings to a committee (the class) to determine necessary repairs needed upon thawing.

The Task

The goal of this project is to give an overall sense of the organization and function of each of the eight human body systems. You will submit a written report describing your research and a copy of the map through the system. Your group will also orally present its findings to the class (committee) complete with a visual aid which may include drawings, computer graphics, photographs of actual organs, pictures from magazines, journals, or books, a video, or a multimedia presentation. Be creative!

The Process

To accomplish this task, each team will be assigned a body system. The team will then be expected to complete the following:

  1. Compile a written research paper which must include topics and vocabulary found at each site.
  2. Create a map of the pathway through the system. (Be Creative).
  3. Describe at least one disease, disorder, or damage that you found while on your journey through the system. You will present this, along with suggestion for necessary repairs, to the class (committee) in the form of an oral report accompanied by a visual aid. (Remember that damage could have occurred during the freezing process or could be a preexisting condition.)

Evaluation

A rubric will be used to evaluate your project. Click here to view the rubric.

Conclusion

This WebQuest will give you an overall sense of the organization and function of each of the eight systems of the human body. Upon completion, keep in mind that the systems are also interrelated. For further investigation into the interrelationships among the systems and to check your understanding, go to Body Quest.
