What is Copyright Law...

and Why Should I Care?

---Teaching Tips---

Rationale | Curricular Linkages | Classroom Strategies | Technology & Software | Feedback

Rationale

The main reason for having students explore the U. S. Copyright Law is to engage students in a topic that is applicable for many content areas. This should be used as an introductory or enrichment activity. This project gives students the opportunity to explore the numerous resources available on the Internet.

Curricular Links & Uses

This WebQuest was designed for use in music appreciation and theory classes. It incorporates aspects of non-music content areas. Students will explore business law, history, and computer technology. This WebQuest could easily be modified to target copyright as it applies to other subject areas; including art, english and theater.

Classroom Strategies

Please use this activity as a springboard. You know your students, your curriculum and your facilities, so see how Copyright WebQuest can work for you.

Here are some suggestions and tips that might be useful:

  • Be creative with your level of computer access. Many of the pages can be printed out and read off-line. Maybe have team members rotate through an Internet station where they choose an article to print out and analyze at their seats.

  • Download Copyright WebQuest so that you can install it on the hard drives of computers not hooked up to the Internet. All you need is a Web Browser like Netscape's Navigator or Microsoft's Explorer.

Technology Issues

Copyright WebQuest has been designed to support as many users as possible. If you don't have access in your classroom, although you have computers that can support Web browsers, you can download the Copyright WebQuest onto a diskette (see Grabbing Webpages). This way beginners can get an introduction to creating Web pages in a supported environment. Teams should use multimedia when making their class presentations (PowerPoint presentations can be very effective).

Downloading Software for Copyright WebQuest

Adobe Reader: for access to circulars in PDF format that are available from the U. S. Copyright Office website.
