Step One:

First: Food Journal

Using the Food Log, for 7 days chart what and how much food you eat. You may begin the food journal today as day one. Start by carrying a small notebook or scratch pad with you. Each time you eat, no matter how small the amount, make a note in your record. You don't have to measure the exact amounts-just make a reasonable estimate. During this time, make your usual choices even if you skip meals, eat a lot of junk food fast food everyday. You will analyze the nutritional value of the food you eat using the nutritional tools listed below.

Second: Diet Analysis

See how your eating habits and life style fits into the Dietary Guidelines for Americans using the Dietary Guidelines. Following these guidelines can increase your chances of living a long and productive life. Answer the following question?

 

  1. Which of the 6 guidelines are you currently following?
  2. If you do not eat a variety of foods, what is the mainstay of your diet?
  3. Are you physically active in any way-sports, dancing,walking,bike riding, or swimming? If not, what are some physical activities you enjoy?
  4. Are you happy with your weight? You may determine your correct weight and Basal Metabolic (how you use the food for energy) by clicking on Cool Tools.
  5. Do you like fruits and vegetables? According to your individual tastes, can you think of ways to get more of them into your diet-even if you eat out? Click on Guide to Eating to find out. List your vegetable and fruit choices at 3 of your favorite restaurants.
  6. Do you understand the different types of fat and how they effect your body? Health experts have suggestions in making daily food choices. You can click on American Heart Association to find out more. In step two, you will have the opportunity to find out about how your eating directly effects your health.
    • Define and give examples of saturated fat.
    • Define and give examples of unsaturated fat. Define cholesterol. What types of foods are high in cholesterol?
  7. What food did you eat that have the largest amounts of salt?

Look at the Food Guide Pyramid. Foods are placed in groups based on the major nutrients they contain. Choosing foods from each group gives you a variety of flavorful foods every day. After counting the number of servings you have eaten from each of the food groups, answer the following questions:

  1. Do you eat a variety of foods from all of the food groups?
  2. Do you eat the correct number of servings from each food group?
  3. Do you choose the healthiest foods from the food groups?
  4. What do you need to improve or change?

 

Using the Fast Food Finder analyze one or several of your favorite restaurants.

  1. What are your favorite foods?
  2. Of the foods you usually eat, how do they fit into the dietary guidelines and food guide pyramid?
  3. Within your individual tastes, what are your healthiest choices?

 

Find one or several labels from your favorite foods. Using the New Food Label, analyze the nutritional content by answering the following: 

  1. What is the name of the product?
  2. How many servings are in the product?
  3. How many calories are in a serving?
  4. What is the total amount of fat in the product?
  5. What is the percentage of calories from fat?
  6. How much sodium is in the product?
  7. Is this a healthy product? Why? or Why not?   

Step Two: Diseases

Have you ever thought about the overall consequences of poor nutritional choices? Although many factors- among them heredity, lifestyle, and environment- contribute to the development of disease, eating habits are linked to the leading causes of illness in this country. Here are a few of the diseases that are linked to and poor nutrition. Link to special dietary needs find out more.

You should work with 4 other students in a group. You as an individual member will select, research, prepare a visual, and share your information with the other group members. Answer the following questions in your research.

  1. What are the facts about the disease?
  2. What is the disease?
  3. What raises your risks?
  4. What foods do you need to eat?

Your visual should teach the other group members about the disease. You may use any technical presentations.

Step Three:

This will be your opportunity to become a dietitian; planning 7 healthy menus for yourself according to your lifestyle, needs and individual tastes. You will apply the information you have learned in steps one and two. The goal of this project is for you to be what you eat, a healthy individual and still eat the foods you like.
