This lesson was developed as a part of the Shelby County School System's Summer High School Technology Training session, summer 1999.
The lesson was designed to acquaint students with basic Internet search strategies, introduce them to a small portion of available Internet search engines, and enable them to determine which search engine is most useful for a particular search.
This lesson was written for use in a high school library and introduces skills needed for research on the Internet for a wide variety of subject areas.
The lesson was intended to completed in one or two class periods, provided each student team has access to a computer with Internet capabilities.
Required resources for this lesson include access to computers with Internet access with connected printers.
The necessary web sites are listed in the resources section of the student web page.
Entry Level Skills and Knowledge
Learners should have a basic knowledge of computer usage and some experience searching the Internet. The teacher should also be comfortable with computers and searching the Internet. Teacher should also be able to trouble shoot printing problems.
Learners will record answers to the treasure hunt on the provided answer sheet and use the attached Internet search engine evaluation sheet to rate the different search engines.
The concepts taught in this lesson will be invaluable to the students as they do research on a wide variety topic assigned in any of the high school subject area. It is crucial that today's student become a knowledgeable and efficient searcher of the Internet and this lesson has that goal as its focus.
