and how it changed Saturday mornings
Introduction | Tasks at Hand | Internet Resources | Evaluation
Animation has be developing since 2000 B.C. when the Egyptians made their first comic strips. Today's animation is created by using story boards, animation cells and computers. Come follow this fast-forwarded view of cartoons through the ages and experiment with your own animated short stories.
The tasks at hand:
1. Research the beginnings of animation on the web using web links provided here and find two of your own web discoveries. Make a real thaumatrope by following the directions on the thaumatrope page. Remember: animation must tell a story, even if it is very short!
2. Using the web links provided in the resources, find out how a flip book is made and make one of your own with the directions provided on the flip book how-to site. It only needs to be 35 pages long and you should use index cards so they will flip easily. Make sure it tells a story!
3. Find out how film animation began and give a short summary on the life and creations of Walt Disney. Using your favorite Disney character, make a short story board that could be easily animated. There are countless Disney sites out there, so search and find some of your own in addition to the ones listed here. Take some time to visit these sites and be prepared to be amazed and inspired.
4. Compare the animation styles of the 4 major cell animation studios. (This does not include Pixar). Make a time line that shows the times periods in which these cartoons were made, compare characters, assess similarities, differences, humor style and don't forget to play with some of the sounds! Use any criteria you think is important to show how these four studios rate in your opinion.
5. Discover how computer animation is made and create a short children's book explaining it in simple terms to small children. You may illustrate this by hand, or use the computer as your medium. Make sure it uses simple words and is at least 5 pages long.
