Introduction: Have you ever wondered what the area or volume of a solid is? Maybe you wanted to know how much paint you needed to paint your room? or How much water is in your pool in the backyard? Hopefully you will be able to do these things and many others after reviewing this site.
This site, geared for high school student, will attempt to explain these questions. This site will be used after you have received notes and and an assignment from your teacher. You can work alone or with others as you work problems with the steps you will be given. The Internet will provide some resources that will help you better understand these concepts. Several questions will arise during this site:

Task: Students will be asked to do different types of problems (basic to difficult) that will enforce the rules and steps covered below.( They will have to work the problems in step form .) They will be asked to draw and make models in 3-D form to show their understanding of these concepts. Assignments will be given.

Background: You will be using this site to further your understanding of area and volume of solids. Hopefully you received the notes from your teacher and have been given some information on the steps you will be using for these types of problems. You will be required to find all formulas and variables.(height, radius, etc.) Your notes and Dave's Math Table might help.

The Process: There are 3 steps to help you answers these questions.
Step one: Draw the shape of the base and find the area and perimeter.
Step two: Decide what solid formula you need and find all information you will need.(height, radius, etc.)
Step three: Substitute the data into the formula and calculate your solution

Evaluation:
Your performance will be based on how you work each step. You will be given 5 points for completing step one. You will be given 5 points for completing step two and 10 points for completing step three.( if you have the correct answer) You can work in groups or alone to understand the process, but eventually you will be required to solve these on your own. Check the Rubric Assessment to get more details on the grading system. Points will be given for each problem completed.

Conclusion: Now that you have worked some sample problems and have explored sites on area and volume of solids I hope you have a better understanding of solids and their properties and will be able to put it into practical use. Remember, learning goes beyond the classroom- So don't limit yourself-go out and try what you have learned. Paint that room! Concrete that patio!!1
