Why Graphs:

Graphs are fascinating mathematical objects in the classroom because it is easy to discover things about them, yet you are unlikely to ever run out of things to discover. Because they are made of lines with dots on each end, children can draw graphs long before they can draw numbers, and they can discover many things about graphs without being able to count.

Topic:

A map will be created of streets to include a variety of slopes. This will include horizontal lines, vertical lines, perpendicular lines, positive slopes and negative slopes, and finding the distance from one location to another.

This project will cover the Algebra/Geometry unit on equations written in standard from, slope-intercept form, using rise and run for slope, and distance from one location to another.

Learning Goals:

The student will learn to effectively find the slope of lines, graph the lines, and label the line with the appropriate name.

Student will learn...

Learner Task:

The learner will record in portfolio form the procedures the group used to create a map. The learners will present orally the findings. The learner will e-mail the teacher to give a brief description of the findings. Each group will send a hard copy to the principal, which portrays the map.

The culminating task in this project might be to...

effectively interchange slopes where the distances correlate with the created map.
