Introduction

To do a complete research or experimental project a systematic approach must taken.
In this adventure you will the the steps of Scientific Method to explore the wonderful
world of science. We will start with the basic topic of Matter. To better understand
the subjects, sit back and prepare for a journey. This journey will lead you to understanding the steps, identifying problems, collecting the data on the topic and then
formulating conclusions.

The Task

Students will be able to do the following when you finish the adventure: We will discuss the definition of matter as a group. (Class may divide up into groups of 2-4 students per group)

  • Students will then identify the phases of matter .
  • Students will identify the types of matter.
  • The students will be asked to do a variety of in class assignments
  • Students will do homework assignments to reinforce the concepts taught.
  • The students will then take a quiz to evaluate the mastery of the concept taught.
  • Students will prepare a laboratory experiment requiring them to use the concept taught about matter using the scientific method.
  • Students will be expected to turn in a written paper about the laboratory experiment
with the application of the scientific method.

Resources

Students you will use the following links to help guide you on your wonderful adventure of the scientific exploration.

Scientific Method Activity

Steps of the Method

The Explained Steps of the Method

Matter Quiz

The Process

In order for the student to accomplish an understanding about the concept of Scientific Method the following steps should be followed:

First you should read through the definition of the term "Scientific Method." Make a list of the steps in Scientific Method.

  • State the Problem of Identify the Question for Investigation.
  • Gather information on the problem or question.
  • Form a hypothesis or an educated guess.
  • Perform an experiment to test the hypothesis.
  • Record all collected date.
  • State your conclusion then if necessary repeat the test.

Once the term Scientific Method is defined and understood, the steps should be followed in order at first but, sometimes the data comes in at different points and a step may have to be performed out of order.
Now you are ready to apply the steps of scientific method to the question what is matter?" We can answer that question by first looking at
The Explained Steps of the Method.
Then apply the steps to the activity,
Scientific Method Activity.
After you have practiced the method in the activity you should be able to apply this to a made up activity that involves matter. This lab activity can be done in groups of 2 to 4 people.

.

Evaluation
Now that you have completed your steps in Scientific method and your activity you can evaluate yourself by doing the following activity,Matter Quiz.

Proceed to the rubric to assess your student performance.

Conclusion

Depending on how well you do on the matter quiz, you should be able to apply the steps science method to any question you would like to have answered.
If you did not do well on the quiz go back and retake it. Remember, Scientific Method can be applied to everything you have a question about in science.
