Basic & Supplemental Life

Shelby County Schools offers basic life insurance administered by MetLife.

  • Full-time permanent employees (working 30 hours or more per week) may enroll in coverage within 30 days of their hire date (30 days for a re-hire).
  • Enrollment must be completed online at www.benefitsinsight.com
  • Coverage is effective the first day of the month after the completion of 30 days of employment.
  • If you don’t elect basic life during your initial eligibility period you will have to complete a medical questionnaire and prove evidence of good health.
  • Update beneficiary information at any time by logging into www.benefitsinsight.com

Benefit

Basic Life Benefit -2x salary (up to a maximum of $300,000)

  • At age 65 this benefit is reduced to 65% of coverage
  • At age 70 this benefit is reduced to 50% of coverage

Basic AD&D Benefit -2X salary (up to a maximum of $300,000)

  • At age 65 this benefit is reduced to 65% of coverage
  • At age 70 this benefit is reduced to 50% of coverage

  • How do I update my beneficiary for my Basic Life Insurance? Active employees can update their beneficiary by logging in to www.yourbenefitschoices.com/scs and clicking on update your beneficiary.
  • How does my beneficiary claim this benefit in the event of my death? Beneficiaries should contact the Benefits office to complete the necessary paperwork to claim a death benefit for an employee who has basic life insurance coverage.
  • Can I get additional basic life insurance? Employees are only eligible to receive 2X their basic annual salary up to a maximum of $300,000. Individuals interested in additional coverage may enroll in Supplemental Life Insurance.
  • Can I get basic life insurance for my spouse or children?
