The Science team in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is committed to providing high quality support to teachers and school leaders, students, and parents throughout the district. Through intentional and strategic planning, our goal is to help schools actualize the district’s vision for high-quality teaching and learning.
To enact the vision of high-quality teaching and learning in science classrooms, students will be given the opportunity to do the following:
Understand the “why” behind the science
Engage in 3-dimensional learning (Science & Engineering Practices, Cross Cutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas)
Shift from learning about to figuring it out
Ask questions of themselves, the work, and their peers
To enact the vision of high-quality teaching and learning in science classrooms, teachers will:
Plan, construct, and execute 3-dimensional lessons
Encourage students to research and analyze empirical data in order to draw proper conclusions
Go beyond lecture and provide hands-on experiences
Allow students to grapple with data in order to form a conclusion
