For our district, educating students goes beyond what they’ll learn from their textbooks. Many students don’t realize the things they learn in P.E. or Lifetime Wellness classes have a direct connection to their core classes. Studies show that schools with strong physical education programs’ students have higher test scores, improved attendance, better behavior, enhanced leadership skills and a lifetime of healthy habits.

First Lady Michelle Obama and the White House also recognize the importance of wellness in education, and each year, they honor schools creating healthy school environments through the "Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award." This program is the nation’s top physical education and physical activity distinction for K-12 schools, and the award celebrates a school’s commitment to providing students with at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

This year, Charjean ES, Delano ES, Downtown ES and Northwest Prep Academy are being honored by the First Lady for their commitment to educating the whole student, and they have been awarded the "Let’s Move!" national distinction!

"I applaud these schools for creating Active School environments that are inspiring students to be more engaged learners and ensuring that physical education and physical activity continue to be an important part of every child's educational experience," said First Lady Michelle Obama in a press release.
