SCS Celebrates the Great American Eclipse, Monday August 21

August 16, 2017 5900 views

On Monday, August 21, our students will join millions of people across the country to witness the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse since 1918. The Great American Eclipse is a historic event, and this rare phenomenon presents an incredible learning opportunity for our students.

Our academics and STEM leadership teams have worked with schools to develop lessons and activities specific to the event. Additionally, several schools have worked closely with their adopters and community partners to purchase solar eclipse glasses and to host viewing events. We hope this experience will further peak our students’ interest in astronomy and the sciences.

In addition to learning about the cause and effects of an eclipse, students have also learned about how to remain safe during an eclipse. While eclipse-viewing events will be hosted at several schools, we were unable to provide glasses for all 90,000 students in our District. To ensure an incredible experience for all of our students, we are planning indoor activities for students using NASA’s live-stream in our classrooms.

If you have questions about activities taking place at on your school, make sure you contact your child’s principal.
