Shelby County Schools counselors had the opportunity last week to get some free materials to help students succeed in the classroom.

The annual SCS Showcase was held Wednesday and Thursday at the University of Memphis. Representatives from each school in the district were given $90 to shop for books, games, and DVD’s for their schools.

The focus of this year’s event was Strategic Culture & Climate Planning.  School counselors, administrators and psychologists took part in seminars and workshops designed to teach ways to prevent disruptive behaviors from escalating.  They also learned how a positive school culture can lead to better behavior and more success in the classroom.

"We’re trying to give schools the tools that they need to understand how their climate impacts students and learning, said Dr. Randy McPherson, SCS manager of  Student Behavior and Leadership.

Over the past 5 years, counselors have received $100,000 in free resources through the SCS Showcase.
