Conserving energy and working to transform schools into cleaner, greener learning environments is a top priority for Shelby County Schools’ Project Green Schools.

Each year Green Teams are trained to monitor and find ways to reduce energy waste at their school. The buildings’ energy efficiency is rated on a scale of 1-100, based on an Energy Star tracking tool.  Recently, three schools were recognized as most improved in making their buildings energy efficient for the 2015-2016 school year.

  • The Raleigh-Egypt High School Green Team raised its Energy Star rating 26 points to an overall rating of 59 and saved a total of $14,116.29 on their utility bill
  • Kate Bond Middle School increased its Energy Star rating by 18 points to an overall rating of 48 and saved $28,836.54 on their utility bill.
  • Egypt Elementary raised its Energy Star rating by 17 points to an overall rating of 61 and saved $14,116.29.

Each school was presented with plaques and Energy Star certification signs to place around the buildings.Project Green Schools also honored The City of Memphis Storm Water Division as its Outstanding Community Partner.  The division offers environmental education workshops to SCS Green Schools and provided rain gardens to six schools.

There are currently 25 SCS schools with Energy Star certification. They saved a total of $330,000 off the districts utility bill last year.
