CUBE Annual Award for Urban School Board Excellence

The National School Boards Association’s Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) selected Shelby County Schools (SCS) as the 2020 recipient of the CUBE Annual Award for Urban School Board Excellence. This award is given annually by CUBE to a school district that is recognized for their work in the four core areas of urban school board governance, which areschool board performance, academic improvement, educational equity and community engagement.

“Our Board members have worked closely with the Superintendent to ensure no stone is left unturned as we strive to prepare students for academic success,” said Miska Clay Bibbs, Shelby County School Board Chair. “Moreover, I’m especially proud to be recognized for the steps we’ve taken in response to the COVID-19 health crisis. We, as a District, have gone above and beyond to support our students, families and employees during these unprecedented times.”

The is the second time our School Board has received this award within the last few years, confirming that SCS continues to serve as an example for urban school districts across the nation.

“Without a doubt, Shelby County Schools has the best School Board in the nation,” said Superintendent Dr. Joris M. Ray. “This recognition is well-deserved and I thank them for their continued support of efforts that ensure equity for all children in our community.”

The Board will accept the award during the virtual 2020 CUBE Annual Conference held in September.
