Shelby County Schools is teaming up with iHeart Media, Peppa Mouth of the South and 88.5FM The Voice of SCS to host a Virtual Block Party on Thursday, July 16, from 6-7 p.m.
Each year, SCS hosts a big block party for families at the Board of Education as the start of school nears. Due to COVID-19, this year’s party is moving online. The event will stream live on the SCS Facebook and Twitter pages, and 88.5FM.

During this hour, parents will be encouraged to make their choice for in-school or virtual learning for their child. Only those who have made a choice for the fall and updated thier information in PowerSchool will be eligible for prize giveaways, including gift cards, gas cards, TVs, laptops and more. Memphis rapper Moneybagg Yo will donate 10,000 face masks to SCS students and faculty. There will also be performances and special guests.
“Some may consider this worldwide health crisis a lose, lose situation for schools and education,” said Superintendent Dr. Joris M. Ray. “But CHANGE CHAMPIONS claim this to be a WIN, WIN for our children. As the Shelby County Schools period to choose learning options closes this week, we’re grateful for our partners at iHeart Media and Mouth of the South for uplifting our community and helping our parents make an informed decision. With the health and safety of our families, educatorsand staff as our top priority, we will RETURN STRONGER.”
