Shelby County Board of Education Named 2021 CUBE School Board of the Year

The Shelby County Board of Education has been selected as the 2021 CUBE School Board of the Year. This recognition comes for the second year in a row as appreciation for the strategic work exhibited by the Board including effective policy changes, as well as their continued advocacy for children, families, and school staff. Shelby County Schools (SCS) is reimagining education, schools, and communities in the 901 for all students no matter what zip code they call home.

This year, they are among two school boards celebrated for leadership and EXCELLENCE in urban education.

The School Board also received the National School Board Association CUBE Award for Urban School Excellence in 2020 and 2017 for their work in the four core areas of urban school board governance, which includes school board performance, academic improvement, educational equity and community engagement.

SCS School Board Advocates for Education at National Urban School District Conference

Members of the Shelby County Board of Education are representing 901 teachers and families at the 2021 Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) Annual Conference. As the largest system in Tennessee and the 23rd largest school district in the nation, SCS has emerged as educational leaders to learn from.

Special Session on Social Justice

The event’s first day was filled with insightful sessions designed to share best practices and strategies from various urban school districts. SCS Board member Michelle R. McKissack, who serves as Secretary for the national board, moderated a panel on social justice.

Althea Greene, Stephanie Love, Michelle R. McKissack, and Chair Miska Clay Bibbs are also participating in special segments for Issues in Education where they are discussing pertinent topics impacting students including equity, implicit bias, mental health and social emotional supports. Board member Joyce Dorse Coleman, along with other members, are diligently working to share best practices while also learning innovative advocacy strategies from fellow urban districts.
