Two MSCS Teachers Receive Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

President Joe Biden has selected two Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) teachers as winners of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for Tennessee.

Charles Hayes
Laura Koch

Charles Hayes of Highland Oaks Elementary and Laura Koch of Richland Elementary are the only teachers from Tennessee to receive the prestigious award. A total of 117 teachers from across the nation were named award winners.

The PAEMST is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through grade 12 mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. The award honors the dedication, hard work, and essential role that America’s teachers and mentors play in supporting learners who will be future STEM professionals.

Hayes teaches science and is a 26-year veteran of the District. A member of the STEM Teacher Leader Fellow Program, Hayes was encouraged by leaders of the cohort to pursue the award and received recommendations from his colleagues at Highland Oaks.

Koch has also spent her entire teaching career with the District. This year marks her 21st year teaching math at Richland Elementary. She was nominated for the award by a fellow educator and encouraged to complete the application process.

Winners of the PAEMST receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

Established by Congress in 1983, the PAEMST program authorizes the President of the United States to bestow awards each year. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in improving mathematics and science education.
