We’ve all heard the saying that it takes a village to raise a child.

And that saying reminds us that everyone has a role in our children’s academic success and safety. Everyday, dozens of officers work across Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) to keep students and our schools safe. MSCS also partners with restorative justice and social service agencies on collaborations that address community and family health because we understand that what happens in the home can follow students to the schoolhouse.

National trends, such as “swatting” impact school safety, too. As partners in your child’s education, we’ve created a flyer to help inform parents about emerging trends affecting school districts nationwide.

To ensure that MSCS continues trending up, we need families to have age-appropriate conversations with their children about these safety issues. We’re also asking you to join us in our academic and safety efforts by conducting the 3 Key Checks every day.

What are the 3 key checks?

They are things we are asking adults to check every night and every morning as they prepare their children for school.

  1. Check their homework to make sure that it's neat and complete.
  2. Check their devices to ensure that they are powered up and used for District-approved purposes only.
  3. Check their backpacks to ensure that they contain only school-related items, like textbooks and tablets.

Our security team, teachers, and staff are all part of your child’s village, and they’re doing their part to keep our schools safe and our classrooms thriving. But that work has to start even before students walk through the school doors.

As Chief of Safety and Security for MSCS, I am committed to working with parents, families, and community partners on innovative approaches to student well-being. Only through such partnerships will we create the thriving village that all students deserve.
