Search for the next MSCS superintendent enters the Final Stretch

Public is Invited to Attend Meet & Greet, Watch Finalist Interviews

The three finalists for Memphis-Shelby County Schools’ next superintendent will be in the city this week as the search enters its final stages. The MSCS School Board will host two days of community engagement activities and in-depth interviews on Thursday, Feb. 1, and Friday, Feb. 2, 2024.

“We’re inviting the community to continue with us on this journey and get to know these dynamic candidates,” said Board Chair Rev. Dr. Althea Greene.

The finalists are:

  • Yolonda C. Brown, Chief Academic Officer, Atlanta Public Schools
  • Dr. Marie Feagins - Chief of High Schools and Leadership Development, Detroit Public Schools Community District
  • Dr. Cheryl Proctor, Deputy Superintendent, Instruction & School Communities, Portland Public Schools

On Thursday, community organizations with reserved slots will have an opportunity to converse with the candidate in small groups. Later that evening, the public is invited to attend a Meet & Greet Reception where they can meet and learn more about the three finalists. And on Friday, the community is welcome to watch the livestream or attend the Board interviews with the finalists. The interview order of the candidates will be decided by a lottery Friday morning.

“I encourage our community to actively engage as we progress to the final stages of the process,” said Search Co-Chair Joyce Dorse Coleman. “Your insights and participation are invaluable in shaping the future of our district.”

Community engagement has been a cornerstone of the search process this school year. The Board and staff have engaged and informed the public through flyers, website updates, community meetingsemployee listening sessions, and even tailgate talks. This commitment to transparency extends to the final interview stage and community events.

“We hope families, staff, and all who care about the future of children and the Mid-South will come out and give the candidates a warm Memphis welcome,” said Search Co-Chair Stephanie Love. “Let’s show them the heart and soul of the 901.”
