A lifelong Memphian with his eyes fixed firmly on the sky, Jackson H. journey through East High School has culminated in two significant milestones: graduating from high school and achieving acceptance into the highly selective United States Air Force Academy (14% acceptance rate), bringing his lifelong aspiration of becoming a pilot in the Air Force remarkably closer.

His ambition isn't a recent spark; it ignited back in fifth grade. Upon entering East High, Jackson discovered the United States Air Force Academy, and from that moment on, every academic and extracurricular endeavor became a stepping stone toward Colorado Springs. "That is the best way to be a pilot, in my opinion," Jackson says with conviction, his enthusiasm for military aircraft clear. "You have a chance of being a pilot, plus military planes are much cooler than commercial planes. I will have a lot of fun."

East High has been instrumental in preparing Jackson for this next chapter. The school’s distinctive four-year ground school program laid a strong foundation in aviation fundamentals, sparking his passion for flight and equipping him with real-world knowledge. Outside the classroom, Jackson seized every opportunity to take to the skies whether through free flying sessions with his aviation teacher or attending summer programs. He participated in the ACE Academy in Memphis, the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida, and the Luke Weathers Flight Academy (LWFA) in Olive Branch, Mississippi. “The most impactful was LWFA,” Jackson recalls. “I spent two weeks in Olive Branch, and by the end, I flew a plane solo. It was all free, and probably the best thing I could’ve done – not just for the Air Force Academy, but for my college applications overall.”

Beyond aviation, Jackson has been a driving force in East High’s JROTC program, where he rose to the rank of cadet Command Sergeant Major (c/CSM), the highest enlisted position. In this role, he supervised peers, managed cadet rosters, and reported on morale and performance – demonstrating a maturity and leadership style that has earned him widespread respect.

“Jackson is one of the most respectful and responsible students I have encountered,” said Natalie Humphries, his school counselor. “Despite facing numerous family and personal challenges, Jackson embodies the values of integrity, resilience, and determination. His academic achievements, leadership skills, and ambition make him a standout senior.”

Indeed, his achievements extend into the classroom, where he has excelled in rigorous courses like AP Chemistry and Calculus, aligning well with the Air Force Academy’s STEM-focused curriculum. He also captained East High’s champion marksmanship team, leading them to back-to-back district championships and earning the distinction of top shooter in the district.

Still, when asked what he’ll miss most, Jackson doesn’t mention trophies or accolades. “All four of us [on the team] are tight-knit, and we win. I am going to miss that,” he says. He also fondly recalls the simple joy of playing cards with friends, a reminder of the community he’s built during his time at East.

Despite acceptances to prestigious institutions like Brown University and West Point, Jackson’s heart remains with the Air Force. His path reflects unwavering focus, an unrelenting work ethic, and a deep sense of purpose.

Jackson H. is, without question, Destined for Greatness. As he prepares to take flight, we celebrate not only his achievements but the bright future ahead, for him and for every member of East High’s Class of 2025.
