SCS Highlights Five Years Of Student Success With #WeAre901 Celebration Tour

Shelby County Schools leaders celebrated 5 years of student success on Monday with the #WeAre901 Celebration Tour.

The entire SCS community has worked tirelessly over the past five years to achieve significant improvements in five key areas: academics, turnaround, funding, safety, and equity.

“Back then, many feared our district was headed for total chaos and failure,” said Superintendent Dorsey Hopson. “But five years later, we’re able to celebrate significant District-wide growth and improvement.”

Superintendent Hopson was joined by board members and notable SCS alumni such as University of Memphis Basketball Coach Penny Hardaway, Shark Tank winners Madison Star and Mallory Iyana, American Idol finalist Gedeon McKinney, Former NFL player Daniel Williams, Chocolatier Chef Phillip Ashley, and K-97’s Devin Steel for an all-day tour to highlight the District’s successes. During each stop, Superintendent Hopson spoke about the successes achieved at the school and SCS alumni shared their success stories to inspire students to keep working hard in class.

The tour highlighted the following accomplishments at the designated schools:

  • Second Highest Growth Score in TN - AB Hill Elementary School
  • iZone Successes - Douglass High School
  • $200 Million Invested in Schools - East T-STEM Academy
  • Safer School Environments - Manassas High School
  • Increased Equity - Kingsbury Elementary School
