John P. Freeman Optional School teacher Erica Stephens has been recognized with the prestigious Milken Educator Award, which comes with a $25,000 prize.
Stephens was surprised with the award during a school assembly on Thursday, October 20 to celebrate John P. Freeman’s state Reward Schools status. Tennessee Education Commissioner Dr. Candice McQueen and Shelby County Schools Chief Academic Officer Dr. Antonio Burt presented Stephens with the check after the announcement.
“I am rendered speechless. All I can say is thank you and I will embrace this opportunity,” said Stephens. “Thanks to all of my students. This a testament for you. I had no idea this is coming my way, so please continue to work hard and rewards will come your way.”
The Milken Award, which has been named the “Oscars of Teach,” honors teachers across the country who exemplify excellence and innovation in the classroom. Stephens, who is a fourth-grade math teacher a John P. Freeman, is one of 40 teachers to receive the award this year.
