In a unanimous vote, the Shelby County School Board has decided to end a national search and name Dr. Joris M. Ray as the permanent superintendent of Shelby County Schools.
The vote happened at Tuesday’s Board Business Meeting after Vice-Chair Stephanie Love proposed a resolution to end the search.
“I’m incredibly honored by the opportunity that our School Board has given me. I will continue to fight every single day to improve the lives of our students, no matter which neighborhood they call home,” said Dr. Ray. “Thanks to the Board of Education and to all of the students, parents, teachers, principals, District staff and members of the community for all of your love and support.”
Dr. Ray was appointed Interim Superintendent in December after former Superintendent Dorsey Hopson announced his resignation. Dr. Ray took over the position in January.
Since Dr. Ray took the position in January has been working hard to strengthen learning opportunities for all SCS students. In February, he laid out his “Seven Next Steps Toward Destination 2025.” This plan will focus high school supports, such as providing AP and College Prep courses across the board rather than in select schools, and a heavy focus on Social Emotional Learning.
A Whitehaven High School graduate, Dr. Ray has served SCS in multiple roles during his 22-year career, including teacher, assistant principal and Director of Alternative Schools.
In his previous role as Chief of Academic Operations and School Support, Dr. Ray played a critical role in building a culture of success in the multi-faceted landscape of District operations. He directed more than 10 specialized areas, including some of our most prominent programs and divisions – Optional Schools, the District’s enrollment and school choice processes, Summer Learning Academy, Family & Community Engagement, Parent Welcome Center and others.
With the motto for all children, “Dream, Stand, Believe and Achieve with Courage,” Dr. Ray has been instrumental in improving the life and academic future of every SCS student, no matter which neighborhood they call home. His public education investment is indicative of his visionary thinking and strong sense of responsibility to ensure the development of productive citizens and future leaders.
Dr. Ray has a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from The University of Memphis and was recently named a 2019 Outstanding Alumnus. He is still active on campus as a mentor for young men through Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Kappa Beta Chapter).
