Each fall, Idlewild School’s 5th grade students participate with a host of other school children
in the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Weekly lessons are taught by Memphis
Police on skills need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. Students also learn to identify ways
to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence free lives. During the last two weeks of the program,
students write essays about what they learned. The best essays from each class are entered into a citywide contest.
