Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Jackson elementary participated by bringing together the community, children, and books.

The 13 Expressions of Love Program is an opportunity to build relationships between County Commissioners and the people they serve.  Commissioner Willie F. Brooks, Jr.  visited with classrooms and read to students. Tasha Jones conducted a follow-up parent meeting on parent engagement. Healthy choices was the main topic of discussion.  Afterwards, parents took a tour of our learning garden to see the vegetables their children planted last month.

Parents visited their child's classroom where teachers conducted presentations.  Parents also visited booths where they obtained information on homework, healthy snacks, health services through Methodist Hospital, weekend bags from Life Church, and library card information. A drawing was held where two students won bikes.

Los padres visitaron el salon de clase y se llevaron a cabo presentaciones.  Los padres tambien visitaron las mesas donde obtuvieron informacion sobre la tarea, meriendas saludables, servicios sociales con el hospital Methodista, bolsas de fin de semana de la iglesia Life Church e información sobre tarjetas para la biblioteca. Una loteria donde dos estudiantes se ganaron dos bicibletas.

Teachers attended several professional development sessions.  Ms. Wilbern and Mrs. Burnette lead a writing workshop.  Mrs. Mitchell presented information on SRSD. Teachers received information on TEM 4.0, counseling services, literacy, and completed a data dig.

Mr. Lewis, with Blue Cross, gave parents information on the Affordable Care Act.  Parents were also given the opportunity to register online.  Mr. Miranda was present to answer questions.  Ms. Price and Ms. Anderson opened the meeting with information about TCAP and tutoring.

Mrs. Heidelberg presented a certificate of appreciation to Audrey Bonner for her time as a volunteer tutor.  She gives up her personal time to tutor students and we thank her for her time and dedication.

Professional Development

Teachers completed a common core reflection activity which included their plan of achieving the goal of increasing scores by 10%.  Ms. Peete, Performance Improvement Team (PIT) member, presented information on TEACH 5:  Strategies that develop higher-level thinking skills which is part of the TEM 3.0 teacher evaluation.

Kindergarten Parent Meeting

Parents of prek and kindergarten parents met to discuss information and strategies to improve the learning of their child(ren).  Parents transitioned to the computer lab to view sites to help their child practice reading and math skills.

Teachers presented information on literacy and math goals based on SDIS.  Mrs. Heidelberg spoke about the Superintendent's literacy goal and strategies the school is using to improve literacy.  Parents were given a hands-on opportunity to participate in a literacy activity that can be used at home with their child(ren).

Members of the Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis will be teaching students about the culture of China including the language, arts, money, and many other aspects.  Students will participate in this during the after care program at school.  Ms. Anderson and Mrs. Heidelberg met with the director and assistant director of the program, Mr. Yang and Mrs. Jackson, to discuss details of the program which will begin next week.

Students new to Jackson met with various teachers to discuss strategies on improving their assessment scores.

Parent Information Sessions

During parent information sessions, teachers present grade level expectations, assessment information, and activities for parents to use in assisting their children with learning.  Ms. Anderson presented common core information.  Mrs. Heidelberg spoke about the new security wand that will be used as students enter the building.  The wand is a device that detects hidden objects with metal and is being used for increased safety measures.

Fifth grade students attended a common core writing session on narrative writing.  The session entitled, Write Like Your Hair is on Fire, was presented by Ms. Wilbern and Ms. Meeder.

Ice Cream Social and TCAP Celebration

Students enjoyed ice cream and a movie as part of the back-to-school ice cream social.  Students scoring proficient or advanced on the TCAP, attended a celebration which included pizza, chips, drinks, ice cream, and a movie.  Students were rewarded for their success on the TCAP.

Character Day

Students, faculty, and staff dressed as their favorite book or movie character.  Characters paraded throug the halls of the school and then met in the cafeteria for a special presentation by author Alice Faye Duncan.  Special guests from Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Goforth and Mr. Barrett, spoke during the event.

Ms. Easterwood was presented with a certificate of appreciation, by Mrs. Heidelberg, for her tutoring services.  Ms. Easterwood is with Methodist Hospital and tutors Jackson Elementary students each week as part of the community tutoring program in place at the school.

Parent Orientation

Parents received beneficial information on assisting their students in the learning process.  Ms. Pena, a parent, shared her parental experiences about her involvement witht the teachers and staff of Jackson Elementary. Ms. Price presented information on common core and parenting tips.  Ms. Wilbern spoke about ESL (English as a Second Language) and reviewed the writing rubric for fifth grade assessment.  The PLC coach, Ms. Anderson, invited parents to the Title One meeting on August 20th.

Students returned to school on August 5th with their completed summer projects.

TEM 3.0 Training

Teachers received training on the updated teacher evaluation system.  Teachers analyzed the rubric to locate common core connections as well as become familiar with the indicators on professionalism.

Summer packets include homework in math, reading, and science and is based on the common core standards.  All students in Pre-k thru 4th grade must complete a packet this summer and return it on the first day of school in August.  The packet will count as their first homework grade in the 2013-14 school year.  Pictured below are parents picking up their child's packet:

Students in grades 3-5 that complete their homework daily, including weekend homework, received a surprise celebration.  Drawings were held and the winners received new backpacks full of school supplies.  A monetary prize was also awarded.  These students found that hard work pays off!

TCAP Writing Session

After Mrs. Heidelberg spoke to parents, teachers Golden, Brown, Wilbern, and Washington presented information to parents about the upcoming TCAP writing test.  Students worked with their parents to score recently written papers.

All classroom doors are decorated to represent the college attended by the teacher.  This brings awareness of various universities.  The display corresponds to the College and Career Readiness (CCR) anchor standards to prepare students for college.
