The course is only open to students with special permission from the guidance department and teacher recommendation.
PREREQUISITES-Teacher recommendation required. Credit 1

PHYSICAL SCIENCE SC151 Grade 9
Physical Science is a practical study of the relationship between matter and energy. Principles of physics and chemistry are introduced through student involvement in the process of science. The units covered are measurement and motion, classification of matter, patterns of matter, changes in matter, light and sound and energy resources. This course is for students with an average or above average background in science.

This course consists of classroom and appropriate laboratory experiences in several areas. Topics covered are cytology (structure and function of plant and animal cells), microbiology, genetics, photosynthesis, respiration, nucleic acids and protein synthesis, invertebrate and vertebrate zoology, multicellular plant structure and function, and ecology.
PREREQUISITES-Concurrent enrollment in Geometry or Credit 1
Algebra I Honors for incoming 9th grade; Physical Science

BIOLOGY HONORS SC248 Grades 9,10
Honors Biology is designed to accentuate the thought processes and enhance the scientific competencies of each student enrolled so that he/she can fully develop to his/her maximum potential. It is designed for students who are motivated and excel in their cognitive abilities. This course is a hands-on application focused study that highlights synthesis, analysis and inquiry skills. Topics covered are cytology, microbiology, genetics, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, nucleic acids and protein synthesis, zoology, and botany.

Concurrent enrollment in either
Geometry or Algebra II with a
94 avg. in Algebra I.
Teacher recommendation from previous science and math teacher.

CHEMISTRY (Standard) SC351 Grades 10,11,12
Chemistry follows a logical, sequential development of major chemical principles including atomic structure, matter and energy, bonding, mole concept, compound and molecular formation, acid-base chemistry, gas laws, oxidation-reduction reactions and chemical equilibrium.
PREREQUISITES - Biology I Credit 1
C average in Algebra I
Enrolled in Geometry or Alg. II
Math teacher recommendation

CHEMISTRY HONORS SC358 Grades 10,11
Chemistry Honors is designed for students who plan to major in the sciences, mathematics, medicine or engineering in college. Honors chemistry takes an analytical approach to the atomic theory, mole concept, periodic trends, compound and molecular formation, organic chemistry, gas law relationships, acids/bases/salts, chemical equilibrium and electrochemistry. It also includes short topics in nuclear and biochemistry. Honors Chemistry has a strong mathematical and laboratory emphasis. It is sequenced differently than Standard Chemistry. Two research papers are required over the course of the year.
PREREQUISITES - B average in Geometry Credit 1
Enrolled in Alg. II Honors
Science and Math Teacher Recommendation

CHEM COM SC451 Grades 10,11,12
Chem Com is an alternative to the traditional chemistry class. Traditional chemistry concepts are covered but are taught from an environmental/societal point of view. This course stresses a "hands-on" approach to teaching chemistry; laboratory activities are highly emphasized. This course is designed for those students without a sound math background. Recommended for technical students.
PREREQUISITES - Biology I Credit 1
Algebra I
Science and Math Teacher Recommendation

PHYSICS SC361 Grades 11,12
Physics is a study of the nature of basic things. Topics include mechanics, properties of matter, heat, sound and light, electricity and magnetism, and atomic and nuclear physics.
PREREQUISITES - Biology and Chemistry Credit 1
Algebra I, Geometry and
completion or enrollment in Alg. II.

HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY SC381 Grades 11,12
Human Anatomy and Physiology is a systemic study of the human body by comparing the structures and integrated functions of the various systems. Emphasis will be on the major systems and how they coordinate activities to help maintain a healthy body.
PREREQUISITES: Biology I and Chemistry Credit 1

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SC271 Grades 10, 11,12
Environmental science is a course that focuses on the development of the environmental movement, explores natural ecosystems, and issues concerning a growing world population. Issues are approached at a basic level and build in a logical, systematic way toward a solid, comprehensive understanding of our natural resources. When paired with ecology, students may earn a full science credit which can be used as one of the three sciences needed for graduation.
PREREQUISITES: Physical Science Credit 1/2

ECOLOGY SC371 Grades 11,12
Ecology focuses on natural ecosystems and how the population balances is a key factor in sustaining the ecosystem. Topics will include soil, water, eutrophication, sewage, hazardous wastes, pollution, pest control, acid rain, greenhouse effect, ozone depletion and how our urban-sprawl, energy-intensive commuting lifestyle contributes to environmental degradation, resource depletion and pollution.
PREREQUISITES: Physical Science Credit 1/2

BIOLOGY II SC341 Grades 11, 12
This is an in-depth course focusing on selected topics in biology, such as cytology (cell structure and function), photosynthesis, cellular respiration, enzymes, metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, bacteriology, anatomy and physiology of animals (including humans), and genetics. Laboratory experiences are an important part of this advanced biology course.
PREREQUISITES-Biology I; Chemistry; Algebra I; Credit 1
Geometry; Enrollment in Algebra II

ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY SC449 Grades 11, 12
The Advanced Placement Biology course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course usually taken by biology majors. The range of topics covered includes basic biological chemistry, cell structure and function, energy transformations, photosynthesis, respiration, molecular genetics, heredity, taxonomy and systemic relationships of the five kingdom system, a survey of the Monera, Protists, and Fungi, the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom (with emphasis on vertebrates), evolution, and ecology. This course is very intensive and you should be prepared to arrange your school and personal schedule to provide additional laboratory time, not to exceed two hours per week, in addition to the five periods scheduled for AP Biology. A final qualifying examination is required and the fee of $75 must be paid by all students enrolled in this course at the beginning of the school year. Receiving a certain score on this exam may earn the student college credit. A lab manual at a cost of $16 is required.
