The Freshman Academy

The “MCHS Freshman Academy” was created to evaluate the difficulties many ninth graders encounter year after year: high failure rates, poor study habits, too many discipline referrals and poor attendance. Our goal is to address these issues and work to make the freshmen year a positive experience and a firm foundation for the high school challenges. MCHS is a Title I school and utilizes this funding to improve student achievement.

MCHS Academy Goals are:

  • To empower teachers to develop, implement and evaluate new strategies for enhancing student success.

  • To develop classroom management and discipline techniques that cultivate student maturity, responsibility and a sense of respect.

  • To provide teachers with a better understanding of the developmental needs of the 13 - 15 year old student.

  • To instruct and model organizational, time management, and study skills.

  • To improve and promote teacher/parent communication.

  • To promote collaborative efforts, interdisciplinary instruction and cooperative learning.

  • To provide extracurricular opportunities for new freshmen to help integrate them into the collective student body.

  • To provide incentives for and recognition of student success.
