To work, learn, and function successfully in a technological society, teachers and students must be empowered with the skills to use technology effectively. The Shelby County Schools Instructional Technology Standards have been developed to promote an integrated approach to the learning and teaching of technology. The purpose of this document is to provide standards for student achievement and activities for instruction.

The use of technology should complement and enhance successful teaching methods rather than replace them. Students should view technology as one of many tools used to solve problems and accomplish tasks. Technology should not be taught in isolation, but must become an embedded component of the curricula.
Standard One addresses the use of basic applications and the operation of technology systems. This includes knowledge of hardware, an understanding of electronic information resources, and the use of productivity applications such as word processing, drawing and painting tools, spreadsheet, database, as well as applications for multimedia presentations.
Standard Two focuses on the ethical, social, and personal safety issues that face individuals in todays world. Students learn to use information systems responsibly and appropriately.
Standard Three helps students apply a wide range of critical thinking and productivity skills. Emphasis is given to working individually and cooperatively to make decisions, creatively solve problems, and communicate effectively with others.
