Introduction

To work, learn, and function successfully in a technological society, teachers and students must be empowered with the skills to use technology effectively. The Shelby County Schools Instructional Technology Standards have been developed to promote an integrated approach to the learning and teaching of technology. The purpose of this document is to provide standards for student achievement and activities for instruction.

The Shelby County Schools Instructional Technology Standards are as follows:
Standard 1:
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers and applications as well as an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.
Standard 2:
Demonstrate responsible use of technology and an understanding of ethical, social, and safety issues in using electronic media.
Standard 3:
Demonstrate ability to use technology for research, problem solving, and communication. Demonstrate ability to locate, evaluate, collect, and process information from a variety of electronic sources. Demonstrate the ability to use media to interact or collaborate with peers, experts, and other audiences.

The use of technology should complement and enhance successful teaching methods rather than replace them. Students should view technology as one of many tools used to solve problems and accomplish tasks. Technology should not be taught in isolation, but must become an embedded component of the curricula.

Standard One addresses the use of basic applications and the operation of technology systems. This includes knowledge of hardware, an understanding of electronic information resources, and the use of productivity applications such as word processing, drawing and painting tools, spreadsheet, database, as well as applications for multimedia presentations.

Standard Two focuses on the ethical, social, and personal safety issues that face individuals in today’s world. Students learn to use information systems responsibly and appropriately.

Standard Three helps students apply a wide range of critical thinking and productivity skills. Emphasis is given to working individually and cooperatively to make decisions, creatively solve problems, and communicate effectively with others.
