Vision of ELA Teaching and Learning
In our ELA classrooms, students will:
Build strong reading foundational skills, starting in the early grades
Work with worthwhile and complex texts
Experience a volume of reading to build knowledge, vocabulary, fluency, and independence
Regularly discuss and write about texts, grounded in evidence
Own the thinking of the lesson
Effective ELA instruction requires research-based instructional practices, which include:
Thoughtfully planned and executed lessons
Attention to both skills-based and meaning-based competencies
Daily integration of reading, writing, speaking and listening to understand texts and express understanding
An environment that supports text-based discourse
