District-Wide Days of Service Slide Show

The District-Wide Days of Service Campaign took place during May 16-20. Students were given the opportunity to close out the year to serve their schools and others. The Days of Service encouraged students to give back to the community. This initiative promoted “agents of change,” where students had the opportunity to serve and engage in activities that would leave a lasting impact.

Special thanks to all the schools that participated in the District-Wide Days of Service event! Click here to see some highlights featuring students, administrators, teachers, faculty, staff, families, and community stakeholders in action!

Read for the Record

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record raises public awareness about the importance of early childhood education programs, early literacy, and community involvement for all children of every income level by gathering to read the same book on the same day. We are requesting that every elementary school join us in setting a new world record in a way that engages our entire community – children, families, and civic leaders – in our schools.

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction has purchased a special paperback edition for our Pre-K-2nd-grade teachers so that they may participate with their students on the campaign day – October 27, 2022. The 2022 Read for the Record Book is Nigel and the Moon by Antwan Eady, illustrated by Gracey Zhang. In addition, Jumpstart has resources available online for educators, including classroom activities, lesson plans, certificates of participation, registration guidelines, and other pertinent materials.

Each year, the office of Curriculum & Instruction recommends one elementary school to serve as a host school for the District celebration of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign. While all elementary schools participate, dignitaries will receive unique District invitations to attend the celebration at the host school, and media coverage will be concentrated on that site.

  • This year, we ask schools interested in being selected to be the host school to complete the form at https://bit.ly/22RFTRHOSTAPP by Friday, July 15. One elementary school will be chosen from the Department of Academic Affairs submitted applications to be our host site.

Below are suggestions to assist with planning your celebration:

  • Garner the support of faculty and staff for assistance with decorations for storytimes. Invite parents and community leaders to be in-person and/or virtual guest readers on October 27. Encourage whole-school participation. We want every student to hear Nigel and the Moon on October 27, even though the focus is on early literacy.
Your school will receive a copy of Nigel and the Moon for each PreK through 2nd-grade classroom. Ensure that the books are shared with all Pre-K through 2nd grade teachers. Let us know what you are planning so we can share!

If you have any questions, please contact Alicia Fields at fieldsa@scsk12.org, Library Services Advisor, or Margaret Montgomery at montgomerymv@scsk12.org, Educational Support Manager.

SDC Registration Info for 2022-23

Statewide Dual Credit registration for 2022-2023 is now open. Using the button at the bottom of the page, school principals can submit their intent to participate in Statewide Dual Credit for the 22-23 year. Each school is required to register annually to participate.

Here are a few notes:

  • All registration should be finalized by 6/1. However, please wait until you have a finalized list of teachers before submitting registration info.
    • Every SDC teacher needs to be represented on the registration - even if they have taught in the past. Any teacher missing from the list will miss out on all communications.
    • Teacher changes can be updated throughout the year but must be done so promptly. Any course that goes three weeks without the teacher completing the training will not be eligible for the exam.
  • Teachers will receive information regarding any necessary training in late June/early July. SDC training was changed to be required only once instead of annually as of 2020. Any updated course content for the courses changing next year will be delivered to teachers in a focused video, but they will not have to retake the entire training.
  • This year an optional field was added to nominate a district representative contact. This contact will receive a copy of your registration and will be signed up for some SDC update communications. This is primarily to assist larger districts in coordinating registrations. If you have any questions, talk with your district staff before submitting.
  • MSCS District Representative Contact: Armella Smith: smithaa@scsk12.org
  • Note that we just received news that the State Board did not approve the SDC Sociology course (G04H73) of Education for the 2022-2023 academic year and beyond due to concerns that it did not comply with TCA 49-6-1019 that passed last summer. Therefore, it is no longer an approved high school course and cannot be offered.
  • Note a special addendum to the SDC agreement regarding the new Introduction to Education Course. This addendum concerns the field experience required for the course.
  • SDC Sociology will NOT be offered for the 2022-23 school year.

Additional information regarding SDC course prerequisites and teacher endorsement requirements are accessible through the following link: SDC Course Changes and Endorsements. Please contact Armella Smith if you have questions regarding Dual Enrollment or Statewide Dual Credit courses.
