Tennessee Law to Increase Access to School Sports for Student-Athletes in Foster Care
Tenn. Code Ann. § 49-2-136 became effective in 2021 and requires schools to notify the TSSAA of an enrolled student’s placement in foster care if the student expresses interest in participating in interscholastic athletics. Failure to do so may result in the student-athlete being ineligible.
The TSSAA Portal is a primary point of interaction between member schools and the TSSAA state office. Schools should submit all potential student-athletes via the portal for TSSAA/TMSAA sanctioned sports. Foster care students are submitted in the same fashion.
For special hardship cases, TSSAA has the authority to set aside the effect of any eligibility rule upon student-athletes per specific circumstances outlined in the TSSAA Constitution and Bylaws. If you have any additional questions, please contact the TSSAA regarding submission procedures.

Maintaining Regular School Attendance During the Holiday Season
- As the winter holidays approach, please remind families of the importance of regular school attendance. Absences tend to increase during the days leading up to and following a holiday, but every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. Regular school attendance is essential for student success.
- To remind families of the importance of regular school attendance, you may want to:
- Send a letter home to students or post a reminder on the school website.
- Thank families for their partnership and emphasize the importance of their support in ensuring that students attend school every day.
- Highlight the many opportunities that students gain from attending school, such as academic enrichment, social and emotional development, and preparation for college and careers.
- To maintain student engagement and enthusiasm, consider planning a fun activity for the day before break begins and for the day school resumes.
Thank you for your commitment to student success. By working together, we can help all students reach their full potential.
Attendance Procedures and Reminders
- School administrators must ensure teachers record attendance daily and input grades in Power Teacher Pro. Do Not use paper forms.
- School office staff should process and reconcile daily attendance codes submitted by teachers.
- Each school should have an attendance administrator who can assist and verify the accuracy of attendance data.
- Please contact Millie Avery at 416-6007 with any questions.
