Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) proudly celebrates Dr. Ollie Liddell, Director of Bands at Memphis Central High School, who has been named the 2026 Outstanding High School Music Educator by the Tennessee Music Education Association (TMEA). This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Liddell’s dedication to excellence, student achievement, and the lasting impact of music education.
Music has long been a central part of Dr. Liddell’s life. The son of a band director and former Director of Bands at Jackson State University, he grew up immersed in the discipline and creativity that music fosters. Although he initially pursued a degree in chemistry, Dr. Liddell spent nearly a decade touring as a professional musician before returning to higher education to earn advanced degrees in music education, including a PhD.
Since joining Memphis Central High School in 2012, Dr. Liddell has developed a nationally respected band program built on high expectations, strong relationships, and a commitment to continuous growth. Under his leadership, students have earned numerous superior ratings and national recognitions, reflecting both the strength of the program and the dedication of the young musicians he serves.
While the TMEA recognition is a significant milestone, Dr. Liddell considers student growth to be the true measure of success. “The biggest reward is seeing students grow,” Dr. Liddell said. “Watching them develop into confident musicians, educators, and professionals is what motivates me every day.” Several former students have gone on to become music educators, including some now serving within MSCS, while others continue to perform professionally or maintain music as a lifelong passion.
Dr. Liddell believes music education extends far beyond performance. He emphasizes the important role the arts play in helping students better understand themselves, build confidence, and develop meaningful connections with others. “Music impacts both the mind and the heart,” Dr. Liddell explained. “It helps students discover deeper meaning and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.”
Central to his teaching philosophy is the belief that students should strive for excellence without limitations. Dr. Liddell encourages students to think beyond local competition and to measure their growth against the highest standards, pushing them to continually refine their skills. By maintaining rigorous expectations while celebrating progress, he helps students develop resilience, discipline, and confidence that support success in all areas of life. Among the many highlights of his career, Dr. Liddell points to Memphis Central’s participation in the prestigious Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition as a defining moment. Performing on a national stage demonstrated what students can accomplish through dedication, preparation, and belief in their abilities.
Beyond accolades, Dr. Liddell finds fulfillment in seeing students build lasting friendships, strong work ethic, and an enduring appreciation for music. “The goal is for students to experience joy through music,” he said. “When students see how effort leads to growth and achievement, those lessons stay with them throughout their lives.” He also encourages aspiring educators to lead with authenticity and genuine care for students, noting that meaningful relationships are essential to effective teaching. “You cannot truly be effective if you do not love your students,” Dr. Liddell said. “When students know you care about their success, they are willing to challenge themselves and reach their highest potential.” As Dr. Liddell prepares to accept the TMEA Outstanding High School Music Educator award on April 12, several Memphis Central students will also participate in All-State performances, continuing the school’s strong tradition of musical excellence.
Dr. Liddell’s recognition reflects the powerful influence dedicated MSCS educators have on shaping student experiences and outcomes. Through strong academic and fine arts programs, MSCS continues to provide students with opportunities to grow their talents, develop discipline, and pursue excellence in every path they choose.
