Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) proudly celebrates the Ridgeway High School Singers for earning a Gold rating at the prestigious WorldStrides Heritage Festival in Chicago and receiving an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2027. This outstanding achievement reflects the dedication, talent, and perseverance of Ridgeway students and highlights the continued strength of fine arts education across the district.
Under the direction of Choral Director Breunka Kimbrough, the Ridgeway choir delivered a powerful performance that impressed adjudicators with its musical precision, versatility, and emotional connection. The ensemble performed a diverse repertoire that showcased the group’s ability to transition seamlessly between genres, languages, and vocal styles while maintaining a high level of artistry. “It gives us the boost that we need here at Ridgeway,” said Ms. Kimbrough. “It allows our students, families, and school community to see that we are moving in the right direction. We are the ambassadors — we’re the change that we want to see.”
In addition to the Gold rating, two students received individual honors for their excellence and leadership. Senior Destini Caldwell earned the Maestro Award for Outstanding Soloist, an honor that provides additional opportunities to perform at future national and international events. Senior Sydney Woods was also recognized for her leadership and dedication to the choir program, supporting both her peers and the success of the ensemble. Preparation for the national competition required months of commitment, collaboration, and perseverance. Through focused rehearsals, planning, and ongoing support from families and community partners, students worked diligently to refine their performance and represent Ridgeway with excellence.
“They were able to switch from genre to genre, singing different languages and styles,” said Ms. Kimbrough. “When I got on stage and heard my students singing, I could tell they felt the moment. That made the performance even stronger.”
Beyond the performance, the experience provided students with opportunities to explore new environments and expand their perspectives. While in Chicago, students visited destinations such as the Shedd Aquarium and Navy Pier, gaining exposure to cultural experiences that encouraged personal growth, curiosity, and confidence. “Performing arts is a holistic experience,” Ms. Kimbrough said. “It teaches students how to exist in environments that may not look like theirs and gives them confidence wherever they go. It’s bigger than a performance, it shows them they can be a part of any space they step into.”
Ms. Kimbrough, who has served in MSCS since 2018, brings a strong background in music education and performance. As a classically trained vocalist, she is committed to ensuring students have access to meaningful opportunities that support both artistic development and personal growth. “I aspire to inspire before I expire,” Kimbrough shared. “My goal is to make sure my students are exposed to opportunities that help them grow into the best version of themselves.”
As the Ridgeway High School Singers prepare for their upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall, this accomplishment represents a proud moment for the entire school community, and a reminder of the impact strong arts programs can have on student achievement.
This milestone reflects the impact of meaningful learning experiences that help students discover their voice, strengthen their confidence, and reach new levels of achievement. Through engaging academics and vibrant fine arts programs, MSCS continues to create pathways for students to explore their interests, develop discipline, and showcase their talents on local, national, and global stages.
