Teach Where Greatness Grows: Memphis-Shelby County Schools Makes Historic Investment in Teacher Excellence

In classrooms across Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), something powerful happens every day. Teachers inspire young minds, challenge students to dream bigger, and plant seeds of possibility that shape futures. But those transformative moments don’t happen by accident. They happen because exceptional educators choose to show up in service of our students.

That’s why MSCS is making an unprecedented investment in the people who make those moments possible: our teachers.

“At Memphis-Shelby County Schools, every student deserves an effective teacher,” said Dr. Angela Whitelaw, Chief Academic Officer. That belief drives every hiring decision we make and every teacher recruitment incentive we offer, because attracting exceptional educators is an investment in a child’s future, a classroom’s success, and our community’s tomorrow. When we invest in recruiting great teachers, we invest in the limitless potential of every student we serve.”

Through its Teach Where Greatness Grows campaign, MSCS is repositioning itself as one of Tennessee’s highest-paying school districts. The district has fundamentally restructured its teacher salary schedule, recognizing that our educators deserve compensation that honors their expertise and impact.

Now, qualified teachers can earn more than $100,000 annually based on their certifications and experience. MSCS acknowledges that educators who devote their careers to our students deserve more.

But competitive base salaries are just the beginning. MSCS understands that retaining exceptional educators is as critical as recruiting them. Through the Classroom Teacher Stabilization Incentive, the district is rewarding teachers who remain committed to their schools and communities.

Every eligible classroom teacher across the district can earn a $1,000 annual incentive. Teachers in Priority Schools and the district’s 14 TISA Accountability Schools are eligible for $1,500 annually.

MSCS has also implemented performance-based incentives that celebrate teachers who achieve exceptional results with their students. Eligible teachers in Priority Schools and TISA Accountability Schools who earn qualifying Levels of Overall Effectiveness (LOE) can receive annual bonuses ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 based on their demonstrated performance.

These incentives reflect the district’s belief that great teaching deserves great recognition and great compensation.

“Our teacher recruitment campaign is about more than filling vacancies, it’s about building the instructional capacity our students deserve,” said Alisha Kiner, Deputy Chief of Academics. “Every strategic priority we have depends on having outstanding educators in front of students each day. By making intentional investments in teacher recruitment, we are positioning our district to attract top talent, improve student outcomes, and ensure every child has access to high-quality instruction regardless of the school they attend.”

The district is particularly focused on attracting talent to high-need subject areas where shortages hit hardest: Special Education, Math, English Language Arts, Science, other high-need teaching position, and in Priority Schools. To support these critical needs, eligible new hires in hard-to-fill positions qualify for a $2,500 sign-on bonus.

Of course, exceptional teachers aren’t motivated by compensation alone. They’re drawn to this profession by purpose. MSCS offers educators something money can’t buy: the opportunity to make a genuine, lasting difference in the lives of Memphis children. The district supports professional growth, provides resources for excellence, and builds a community of educators committed to academic achievement and student success.

Every dollar MSCS invests in educator compensation, incentives, and support is an investment in the students who sit in those classrooms. That’s why MSCS is making this significant commitment. We believe our children deserve exceptional educators, and exceptional educators deserve investment.
